Nottingham Forest ready to bolster defence after reaching ‘agreement in principle’ for Moussa Niakhate

Moussa Niakhate could be the next player to join Nottingham Forest after it was revealed they have an agreement in principle to sign him.

Ahead of their long-awaited return to the Premier League, Nottingham Forest have been active in the transfer market. So far, they have brought in Taiwo Awoniyi for a club-record fee and Dean Henderson on loan.

They are also close to completing a deal for French defender Giulian Biancone from Troyes, as revealed by the Daily Mail earlier on Saturday. Able to play as a full-back or centrally in a back three, he is reportedly undergoing a medical.

But he would not necessarily be the only defensive arrival at the City Ground. According to Fabrizio Romano, the promoted outfit are also closing in on a deal for Moussa Niakhate.

The reporter has revealed on his Twitter page that Nottingham Forest have an agreement in principle over the fee they will be paying to his current club, Mainz.

The deal is supposedly in its latter stages, even if there are a couple of smaller details to resolve.

Niakhate was linked with West Ham, Everton and Newcastle in a report during April. However, it appears he could be on his way to Forest instead.

There are no details provided regarding the fee. But it clearly appears Forest and Mainz are on the same page in that aspect.

Moussa Niakhate ready for new challenge

A move to the Premier League would bring an end to four seasons in Germany for Niakhate. He has also previously played for Valenciennes and Metz in his native France.

Given that his contract with Mainz expires next year, now could be the time for the 26-year-old to move on. A Premier League challenge may yet await.

As a left-footed centre-half, he would provide further balance at the back for Steve Cooper’s side. His experience – even if it is not specific to English football – could be beneficial for them as a top-flight club again.

Therefore, it will be interesting to see how Niakhate performs if he does sign for Forest.
