Nottingham Forest close in on exciting double deal to transform backline

Serge Aurier looks set to complete a surprise Premier League return, while Nottingham Forest are reportedly in talks with a left-back.

The former Spurs defender looks all set to become Forest’s 17th signing of the summer after they were promoted from the Championship. All but four of those have involved fees, but Aurier will arrive on a free transfer.

The Daily Mail report the 29-year-old has passed a medicals and will come in as cover in both the full-back positions. But say Forest “remain in the market for further defensive signings”.

An injury to new signing Omar Richards has led Steve Cooper to look for another defensive option. Richards, a new arrival from Bayern Munich, sustained a hairline fracture of the leg in pre-season.

Aurier, who cost Tottenham £23m from PSG in 2017, is a versatile performer and he will bring a depth of experience to the backline.

Cooper is also believed to be hunting for another centre-back. Forest are understood to have had a bid rejected for Wolves centre back Willy Boly. While they are keen on a deal for Tottenham’s Japhet Tanganga.

Tanganga though is thought to be focused on a move to AC Milan. He has dropped down the pecking order following the arrival of Clement Lenglet on loan.

Italian outlet Calciomercato recently reported Milan were pushing for a loan deal, though are unwilling to accept Spurs’ insistence an obligation to buy be included.

Lodi could follow Aurier

Forest for their part are believed to be pursuing a permanent transfer with Spurs chasing a fee of £16.8m.

But Cooper has other irons in the fire and Atletico Madrid defender Renan Lodi is understood to be a target.

The left-back has been linked with Man City and Newcastle, but reporter Jacque Talbot claims Forest are talking with Atletico over a loan move.

Lodi, who has over 100 appearances for the club, has been benched for both of Atletico’s LaLiga games this season.

The Brazil international has a £51m release clause in his deal which expires in 2025.

Meanwhile, Forest are set to pay £4m to sign Bordeaux striker Hwang Ui-jo.

The 29-year-old South Korean scored 11 times for the relegated outfit last season. Forest though plan to loan the player to owner Evangelos Marinakis’ other club Olympiakos.

Unconvinced how the experienced striker will go in the top flight, they will see how he fares in Greece.
