Reports suggest that Mourinho wants to cut our squad to the following 24 players: De Gea, Romero, Johnstone; Jones, Valencia, Darmian, Shaw, Smalling, Fosu-Mensah, Borthwick-Jackson, Bailly; Mkhitaryan, Pogba, Herrera, Depay, Carrick, Schneiderlin,Young, Lingard, Pereira; Ibrahimovic, Rooney, Rashford, Martial.
Pogba is obviously just a rumor and I’d be perfectly happy with Verratti instead to name just one name. Pogba doesn’t strike me as sentimental but may feel he has unfinished business at United as well as having a few friends at the club. If utilized correctly, he’ll perform much better than at the Euros but I’m not holding my breath to see if he signs.
As for the players leaving, I’d be pretty happy with that. Blind could come in handy due to his versatility and passing ability but Mourinho might feel he’s too connected to Van Gaal and/or not enough of a specialist in just one position. Mata is also a player I like but we can’t offer him what he needs: to have the team built around him.
Fellaini and Rojo are nowhere near the required quality and Januzaj went completely off the boil while Schweinsteiger’s legs have gone.
It’s pretty pathetic to think how poor our midfield has been for about a decade, with a few decent combinations in the occasional season since. Schneiderlin was supposed to strengthen us but I haven’t written him off. I think he and Herrera have a lot more to offer than they showed under LVG and I’m satisfied with Mourinho giving them a chance. I hope he’ll also give TFM and CBJ a chance as well as Williams and Tuanzebe from the youth team. Rooney and Carrick are still the elephants in the room along with Valencia, Jones and Young but you can’t change your entire squad in one summer so I’m guessing they’ll be gradually phased out.
I’d be reasonably happy if we ended up with that squad although this summer should only be viewed as the first in a massive and long overdue rebuilding process.
July 13, 2016 at 11:02 pm #1109781Would be a shame to see Blind leave. He showed last year how adaptable he is. Very good LB and DM. Obviously not a Mourinho type CB but with Jones made of glass and Bailly yet to settle in he could still be a very important squad player for us.
July 14, 2016 at 8:08 am #1109982I thought he might go for someone more experienced to partner Smalling. Is there a chance another CB will come in, maybe for Jones? Would still love to see Jones play 20 games in a row, I wonder if Mourinho can get the best out of him/put his injuries behind him like Smalling has.
July 14, 2016 at 9:42 am #1110135I’m surprised Blind is on the list for me he should be a keeper asa squad player. I’d much rather have him in midfield than Carrick anyday.
Mata again a shame as a decent player for me and offers a lot more than Lingard.
I’d personally keep Schweinsteiger on too over Carrick .
Surprised to see Valencia, Jones and Young on that list of retained oplayers!July 14, 2016 at 9:59 am #1110159United should keep Depay and Blind, me being Dutch I know how they are playing and the first season is always tough, surely under a loser as LVG. Depay is a great talent, even CR7 name him in his Top 5 from the biggest talents so far. The only problem with Depay is that his personal life is getting into the media too much, but his work rate is fantastic. Just give him a chance what he could do when he’s starting many match in a row. From Blind, no need to say anything, just look at last season, his vision and being smart in the match, Mourinho needs that in a player.
July 14, 2016 at 11:11 am #1110309Last season it was reported LvG wanted a small squad. This season it is |JM. Isn’t it just possible with player wages so high that the Glazers and money men simply want to reduce the payroll. We do know that 15% cuts have been ordered in all departments.
That said …. isn’t the squad for the first team and reserves. How can the reserves field a team if 16 players are needed for the first team (plus injuries).
July 14, 2016 at 11:30 am #1110366The reserve team is there to provide players for the first team. If too many reserve players are in the first team, they promote U18’s to the reserves.
July 14, 2016 at 11:41 am #1110381We don’t really have a reserve team, we use our U21 team instead.
July 14, 2016 at 11:54 am #1110417Yep, let’s use Mourinho’s wish for a 24-man squad (the same he had at Chelsea) as a dig against the Glazers. It must be them forcing his hand, it has to be their fault!
July 14, 2016 at 12:02 pm #1110441Cant believe JM is actually considering getting rid of Blind. I would have got rid of carrick and put blind in his place in the squad.
If he is happy to get rid of players like Mata and blind but keep Jones, Valencia and Ashley young then i would be seriously worried.
I look at that potential 24 man squad including Pogba and i still cant see it being good enough to win the PL…..
July 14, 2016 at 12:23 pm #1110501It would be strange to get rid of a reliably fit Blind for a totally unreliable Jones. I would also keep Mata over Young purely due to age.
Funny how Fergie liked Carrick, Moyes liked Carrick, LvG liked Carrick and now even your saviour Mourinho likes Carrick yet some of you still question his ability.
July 14, 2016 at 12:50 pm #1110555Hah, I do rate Carrick but in all fairness I think he was offered a new contract more to help with continuity (Giggs being booted out, Rooney no longer being guaranteed first team place) and probably because Mourinho plans on selling our other experienced CM – Schweinsteiger.
July 14, 2016 at 12:52 pm #1110561@happy – You see anything that is not flattering as a dig.
Its a fact football today is a business. Its a fact the Glazers (and others) are in it for profit not love. Its a fact wages and payrolls are high. Its a fact Ed has ordere cuts in all departments. You should be able to join the dots.
My dig was at the LvG fans who tried to argue LvG deliberately wanted a small squad so as to be able to give youth a chance. And here we have JM supposedly wanting a small squad but he’s the man who won’t give youth a chance. Is it not possible money is the motive !
Jeez happy, you defend Jones in another thread and Glazers here. If you had your way we would have a Glazer as manager and a team of Jones, Cleverly, Nani, Ando and Giggs, Scholes, Rio etc.
@homejay – Thanks for the explanation.
July 14, 2016 at 1:04 pm #1110594Has Ed ordered cuts in all departments?
Buying these players this summer can’t end with an overall wage cut (a true one, not one that occurs due to being out of the CL and therefore CL bonuses not being paid).
July 14, 2016 at 1:25 pm #1110642@Alfie = It was reported 15% cuts all departments. Will find the link. It seemed reliable as I recalal but in any case we know payroll to turnover is a key indicator that is monitored and I think under Glazers it has gone down (maybe wrong will try to find the data).
Don’t follow you about buying all these players. We have to wait for the exits don’t we.
Being out of CL could affect our wages to turnover ratio but doubt it since increased revenues from TV and sponsors kick in.
July 14, 2016 at 1:31 pm #1110657Payroll to turnover ratio is something else.
If payroll increases slightly, but turnover increases massively the ratio falls. People will claim that backs a 15% cut in payroll, but that would be a false conclusion.
July 14, 2016 at 1:33 pm #1110663@Alfie – This link talks about us having highest wage bill in 2013-14 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/manchester-united/11552941/Man-Utd-news-United-overtake-Man-City-with-Premier-Leagues-highest-wage-bill.html
The cost cutting hit the news with regards to the academy http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/manchester-united-academy-hit-after-10813422
July 14, 2016 at 1:36 pm #1110681So one paper, and even that paper say the first team squad is unaffected.
July 14, 2016 at 1:39 pm #1110687The payroll is not quite what is meant by cuts I think. The payroll is always monitored and attempts made to keep it low. The cost cutting refers to other operating expenses.
IF true, the point is that despite rising revenues the club is cost conscious and seeking to reduce costs. Given that, is it unrealistic to suspect that trimming the squad has more to do with costs than managers preferences.
Managers normally want options and cover all eventualities. What managers wants injuries to force his hand. We know the Glazers like to stay in background and let the manager take the flak. I dont buy LvG or JM wanting small squads.
July 14, 2016 at 1:46 pm #1110708@Alfie – btw – First you ask if Ed ordered cuts. Then I give you links. Then you moan it was only one paper. Do you expect me to spend hours finding and providing links just because you never read something that was widely reported.
And to clarify, I was not suggesting the squad reduced in response to 15% cut order. But I am suggesting the cuts show the club is seeking to save money and the payroll is an area they always look to keep an eye on.
