Southampton will complete a £12.3m deal to sign Argentine midfielder Carlos Alcaraz on Tuesday, and TEAMtalk has learned a second arrival could quickly follow.
The Saints are in dire straits at present with their Premier League fate hanging in the balance. Southampton have lost six straight in the league, with the time-honoured ‘new manager bounce’ not materialising under Nathan Jones.
The end result sees Southampton sitting rock bottom at present, though the club’s decision-makers aren’t content to go down without a fight.
TEAMtalk has been told a move for box-to-box midfielder, Carlos Alcaraz, is on the verge of completion.
The 20-year-old plies his trade for Argentine side Racing Club and per the Athletic, will arrive in England on Tuesday to undertake a medical.
A four-and-a-half year deal running until the summer of 2027 will be signed. Alcaraz will add goals to Jones’ midfield having notched 12 in 83 for Racing.
Southampton are due to pay £12.3m which is an increase on their initial bid of £8.8m. However, it still falls some way below the player’s release clause of £22m, meaning Southampton haven’t been held over a barrel.
The Athletic added a centre-back and/or forward is also wanted as Southampton push to avoid relegation.
On that front, TEAMtalk has learned Southampton hope to announce an arrival other than for Alcaraz later this week.
Ligue 1 hotshot to follow Carlos Alcaraz?
While we haven’t been able to confirm the identity of the player, we’re told Lorient forward Terem Moffi could be the star in question.
The 23-year-old Nigeria international is being offered around to several clubs and we understand the Saints are in the mix.
Moffi would inject more goals into Jones’ side if his record in France is anything to go by.
The 6ft 2in tall striker has plundered 10 goals in 16 Ligue 1 matches this term. Only Kylian Mbappe and Neymar have scored more in France’s top flight this season.
The nine-times capped Nigeria international operates primarily up front and is also being courted by West Ham and Everton.
talkSPORT reported he’s been valued around the £25m mark by Lorient.
