Southampton make definitive move with offer for Tottenham target Mattias Svanberg

Mattias Svanberg Bologna May 2022

Southampton have made an opening offer of €10m for Bologna midfielder Mattias Svanberg, claims a report in Italy.

Svanberg, 23, was a big hit in Serie A last season and after four progressive seasons in Serie A his time looks to be ripe to move on.

The former Malmo man has one year left on his contract, but Bologna are not set to offer him a new one as they look to raise some funds.

Tottenham have been linked with a move for the international team-mate of Dejan Kulusevski.

Fabio Paratici was reportedly looking at a deal for the 23-year-old in January. However, the club ended up landing Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus instead.

But Italian outlet 1000 Cuori Rossoblu reports that Tottenham renewed their interest in the player.

And now, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Southampton have placed an offer on the table for Svanberg.

No doubt Kulusevski’s success with Spurs has prompted Southampton’s interest. The pair are regarded as the future driving force for Sweden.

Svanberg, who has more than 100 Serie A appearances to his name, managed three goals and three assists in 36 game last term.

Everton and West Ham have also been mentioned as suitors for the player, who looks destined for a new challenge.

Svanberg open to transfer

“I can’t say much beyond what the newspapers write,” Svanberg told Expressen last week. “But I look forward to the summer. We’ll see what happens. I have no problem staying in Italy but I can imagine trying something new.

“It’s fun to be mentioned (as a target for other clubs). It’s something you get used to. We’ll see what happens. Nothing is clear until something is signed.”

Bologna, who finished 13th, are hoping to raise some funds this summer. And an offer to more than double their money on Svanberg, who was a €4.5m recruit in the summer of 2018 could suit all parties.

And looking at Kulusevski’s numbers at Spurs, Svanberg seems like a decent option.

The classy Kulusevski hit the ground running for Antonio Conte and finished with five goals and eights assists from 15 games.

Central midfielder Svanberg fits a similar profile, with 21 appearances for the national side under his belt. And he seems like a good bet for Saints if they can get a fee agreed with Bologna.
