Tottenham in ‘advanced talks’ to banish winger towards home country as Fabrizio Romano reveals medical booked

Bryan Gil and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

One Tottenham Hotspur forward is set to leave the club before the January transfer deadline, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Around 48 hours remain before the January transfer window will close. Tottenham have made use of this month’s market by bringing in Arnaut Danjuma from Villarreal. In turn, there could be an exit from the attacking department he has added to.

There have been some claims that Spurs will sell Lucas Moura six months before the end of his contract if they can. But another potential departure has become even more advanced.

According to transfer expert Romano, Tottenham are in “advanced talks” over the exit of Bryan Gil.

Gil signed for Spurs from Sevilla in 2021, but has never quite fit in yet. He spent time on loan with Valencia last season and has managed just two Premier League starts since.

Rumours have been gathering momentum about a potential return to Sevilla for Gil. Now, Romano has revealed that the Spanish side are “confident” they can lure him back to La Liga.

According to the journalist, “negotiations are progressing” for Sevilla to get their man back. The deal will be a dry loan until the end of the season, with no option to buy.

Sevilla are “pushing” to get it done and are now optimistic that Gil will get the chance to add to his previous 21 appearances for the club.

In fact, the latest from Romano is that a medical has been booked for the Spain under-21 international.

Sevilla need to get best out of Bryan Gil

The Andalusian outfit will need Gil to be at his best if they are to finish in a recognisable position by the end of the season. Sevilla are accustomed to aiming for Europe, but have instead been looking over their shoulders this season.

Jorge Sampaoli’s side are only two points above the relegation zone at the halfway stage of their season. They will need an upturn in fortunes in the months ahead.

Gil might be able to give them something new to contribute, although he has never been the most effective player in front of goal. He only scored twice for them before and has never scored in his 31 Tottenham appearances.

Still, Sampaoli has seen something in him, since he previously tried to take Gil to Marseille. Soon, their paths could meet at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

Indeed, according to an update from Romano, Sampaoli has called the player himself.

Tottenham still have Gil under contract until 2026. The lack of an option to buy in his loan deal with Sevilla might suggest he could yet have a future in north London, or it could simply be because of the late stage of the transfer window things are being agreed during.

He doesn’t seem to be a player for Antonio Conte, but with the head coach’s future unclear, there might yet be a chance for him under another tactician.

If things go better for him back in Spain, though, it might be a better place for him to be.
