Tottenham, Man Utd listen in as Bastoni agent confirms summer decision that will ‘certainly’ come true

Alessandro Bastoni lining up for Italy

The agent of Alessandro Bastoni has delivered a hammer blow to any hopes Manchester United, Chelsea or Tottenham had of signing the Inter Milan defender.

Bastoni is one of the most highly-rated defenders in Serie A. He helped Inter win the Scudetto in 2021 and was part of the squad that lifted the Supercoppa Italiana and Coppa Italia this year.

However, his future at the club has been unclear in recent weeks. Inter’s need to keep their finances balanced has put him at risk, given he is one of their most marketable players.

What’s more, the Italian’s contract is only due to run until 2024. Therefore, this could be their best time to make a decision on his future, one way or another.

His agent, Tullio Tinti, has previously reminded that Bastoni must consider his options as a professional. Even so, his preferred option would be to remain with Inter.

Tinti met with Bastoni’s current employers on Wednesday to further discuss his situation. The centre-half has been linked with a reunion with Antonio Conte at Tottenham, or a move elsewhere in the Premier League with Chelsea or Man Utd.

Yet none have learned of an outcome they were desiring after Tinti’s talks. Instead, the representative has now claimed it is a certainty that he will be staying at Inter.

After leaving the meeting, Tinti said: “Bastoni will certainly remain at Inter.

“He has a contract with Inter, he is happy to play at Inter and there’s no problem.”

Now, the attention could turn to a contract renewal with the Serie A side.

On that topic, Tinti responded: “I respect contracts. If they call me, there’s no problem.”

Bastoni a missed chance for needy Prem defences

It therefore seems like the chances of seeing Bastoni in the Premier League are slipping away. Each of his suitors may have to keep other options open.

He would no doubt have improved any of their backlines. Hence, there may be some regrets about the opportunity to sign him fading.

Bastoni doesn’t want to leave Inter Milan for Tottenham

But remaining with Inter always seemed like his preferred outcome anyway. Perhaps there could be more realistic or accessible targets available on the market.

United, Chelsea and Spurs still need to strengthen at the back for different reasons. The former conceded more goals than relegated Burnley in the 2021-22 Premier League, when captain Harry Maguire in particular came under scrutiny.

Chelsea are losing Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen as free agents. Cesar Azpilicueta could also leave, so there will be a void to fill in the back three.

Tottenham also use that formation at the back, but the left-hand side is an aspect Conte wants to strengthen. Reuniting with a player he trusts in Bastoni would have been useful, but maybe it is not to be.
