Tottenham told Bastoni would make Spurs ‘rival the top teams’, but key Conte star sacrificed

Tottenham should go after Inter defender Alessandro Bastoni this summer to form a fearsome Premier League defence, one pundit has claimed.

Spurs are reportedly after six new signings in this summer’s transfer market as they look to go to the next level under manager Antonio Conte. The Italian has done well and it was mission accomplished on Sunday as they booked their place in next season’s Champions League.

Sunday’s 5-0 win over relegated Norwich ensured Tottenham will have premier European football for the first time since the 2019/20 season.

As for new signings to bolster their squad, Tottenham are reportedly looking at adding to their defence.

Conte worked with Italy centre-back Bastoni as the pair won Serie A with Inter last season. Reports have subsequently claimed that Spurs are in pole position to sign the 23-year-old.

Conte is already happy with Cristian Romero and Eric Dier as two of his senior defenders, with Ben Davies also enjoying a resurgence in the manager’s back-three system.

Speaking to Football Insider, though, Paul Robinson insisted that Bastoni could form a perfect trio with Dier and Romero.

“Bastoni is the one,” the former goalkeeper said in his assessment of the reported Tottenham target.

“The way [Fabio] Paratici and Conte know that market that is a deal they could get done. Bastoni could slot into that left centre-half role perfectly.

“Eric Dier has been so much improved this season. He has really matured under Conte.

“Romero is the best defender they have got but Dier has made a real case to be alongside him next season again. He looks like a well-rounded defender now. He has finally settled on a position. In a back three he looks great.

“They need a left-side one to go alongside Dier and Romero. You add Bastoni and all of a sudden Spurs have a back three that would rival the top teams.”

Davies the fall guy for Bastoni

Robinson’s assessment would leave Davies out of the team in Conte’s best back three if Bastoni arrived.

Davies has been a left-back by trade for a lot of his career. However, he has found his feet as a centre-back in a back three.

And even if Bastoni does arrive to displace Dier, the top teams need options throughout their team – especially in defence – as they manage a busy schedule.

Spurs dealt blow in Alessandro Bastoni chase

Spurs have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Inter's Alessandro Bastoni as Man City link is revealed.

Liverpool’s four centre-backs all rotate well, as do Manchester City’s, to ensure there is no drop-off in quality.

Conte knows he needs options at the back and so Bastoni would prove a great signing for all parties.
