Antonio Conte rejoices over Tottenham breakthrough as he addresses uncertainty about future

Antonio Conte points during Leeds vs Tottenham

Antonio Conte rejoiced after feeling his Tottenham side had made a breakthrough in their 4-0 Premier League demolition of Leeds.

The Italian manager watched his side run riot in the first half at Elland Road. Goals from Matt Doherty, Dejan Kulusevski and Harry Kane saw Spurs virtually kill the game off inside half an hour of action.

It was the opener which particularly pleased Conte, though, as right wing-back Doherty finished after a cross from left wing-back Ryan Sessegnon.

Speaking post-match (via football.london), he said: “For the first time I have seen my mark, about this system. The creation from one wing-back and the other wing-back scoring.

“It means that the work is starting to work. It was a good performance for us against a strong team that is not simple to play against.

“Today we played a really good game, good football. What I wanted to see today was the right spirit, the right character to fight and win the ball and duels, against a team that are masters in this situation.

“Today I asked this to my players. I wanted an answer not only in football aspects but also in these aspects are very important in my opinion.

“Usually my teams are not only strong on the pitch but mentally in their desire and spirit. The opponent that plays us has to know this. We are also working on this aspect.

“I asked for this answer, especially after Burnley defeat. We lost that game because the opponents had more desire.”

Following that midweek defeat Conte shockingly suggested he may leave the north London club in his post-match interview.

Addressing his future, he added: “My words were very clear. I repeat I am a coach that for me it’s not enough to play the game and to enjoy the game, to come back in England and enjoy to play in the best league in the world.

“I want to create something important, to fight, to win, I want this. My words were very clear.”

Tottenham celebrate a goal against Leeds

The three points were already in the bag for the visitors when Heung-min Son added a late fourth.

He was played in by Kane, meaning the pair broke the record for the most goal combinations between two players in Premier League history.

Son told BT Sport: “It is a big honour. The record is important but the three points are too because the result in midweek was not the best.

“We take the record but most important thing is three points.

“It is always a tough place to come here and we needed to show character and responsibility. Every player was fantastic today.

“We can’t just be happy with today, there are more games to come.”
