Arsenal legend tells Tottenham one simple change that’ll make them title contenders
Arsenal legend Ian Wright has discussed Liverpool
Ian Wright believes Tottenham aren’t as far away from lifting the Premier League title as people think, and one simple change could push them over the line.
Tottenham are once again back to square one this season. A new manager is required this summer after sacking Antonio Conte, while a fresh battle to prevent Harry Kane from moving to Manchester is on the horizon.
Spurs have finished inside the top four on five occasions in the last seven seasons. Despite a dramatic lack of consistency this term, they may yet qualify for next season’s Champions League via league position once again.
However, taking that next step and either winning the Premier League or lifting a cup competition has eluded them over the last decade.
The players, various managers and chairman Daniel Levy have all come in for criticism from sections of the club’s fanbase.
However, according to Arsenal legend Ian Wright, their ire should be directed elsewhere.
Wright – who scored 185 goals in just seven seasons for the Gunners – believes Tottenham could become title contenders if their owner changed his attitude.
Joe Lewis holding Tottenham back?
Wright told Premier League Productions (via Football London): “I think upstairs, we are looking at them changing managers. The players have got the blame. Everybody has got the blame.
“But they still have got the same owner, who is very tight with what he is doing and it seems like ‘Oliver, please can I have some more?’ He’s not giving you anymore in retirement.”
Spurs are majority owned (85.55%) by ENIC Group which in turn is owned by 86-year-old British businessman, Joe Lewis.
A Forbes report in March (via Football London) revealed Lewis’ net worth had increased from £4.33bn to £4.82bn over the last 12 months. He was valued around the £3.21bn mark a decade ago.
Yet despite his increasing wealth, Tottenham have rarely competed financially with the likes of Man City, Chelsea and Man Utd in particular.
More recently, Arsenal have greatly outspent Spurs over the last four windows and are now reaping the rewards under Mikel Arteta.
Wright believes if Lewis were to loosen the purse strings and compete financially with the teams they regular finish close to in the table, the long wait for a league title could quickly end.
“[Lewis] is the one whose attitude needs to change or he needs to move on, in respect to what he wants to do with Tottenham,” added Wright.
“For the last few years, they are in and around it and with the right kind of push they could be challenging for the Premier League title, especially when you see what Arsenal are doing.
“Tottenham could easily be doing that as well, but I don’t think the owner is ambitious enough to do that. He’s nowhere near ambitious enough to do that.
“He has been the one common denominator in all of the fails.”
