Tottenham set stricter demands for touted summer deal, putting winger’s future in fresh doubt

Bryan Gil Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur will set sterner demands if they are to allow Valencia to keep Bryan Gil for next season, according to reports in Spain.

Spurs signed Bryan Gil from Sevilla in the summer, sending Erik Lamela the opposite way. However, he only made nine Premier League appearances – all as a substitute – in the first half of the season. His only seven starts came across various cup competitions.

Hence, to avoid stagnating his development, Tottenham sent him away on loan in January. Valencia took the Spaniard back to La Liga for the rest of the season.

Gil is enjoying himself more back in La Liga. So far, he has started three matches each in the Spanish top-flight and the Copa Del Rey. There has already been a building feeling that a longer stay at the Mestalla would be sensible.

However, Plaza Deportiva have now warned Valencia that the situation is complicated. For Los Che to take Gil on loan for the 2022-23 season as well, various factors will have to fall into place.

First, they would have to see if Tottenham would be open to a deal. That depends on Antonio Conte’s plans for the player.

If the Italian gives the all clear for Gil to go out on loan again, club officials will demand more from Valencia. During these six months, for instance, the Spanish outfit are only covering half of Gil’s wages. To extend his deal into next season, Tottenham would want them to make more of a financial commitment, including a potential up-front payment.

However, this may be problematic for Valencia, who have had financial issues in recent years. Owner Peter Lim must decide whether he can fit in an investment for Gil, while also juggling three contract renewals and a couple of pieces of transfer business, one of which is unavoidable.

Should Valencia manage to raise the funds required just to extend Gil’s loan, it would be music to the ears of their fans, though – and Gil himself.

Valencia perfect fit for Bryan Gil

Plaza Deportiva believe Gil finds himself in a “perfect” situation with Valencia. However, he recently admitted the situation is not in his hands.

The winger admitted he had struggled with the physicality of English football, so has been working on that side of his game back in Spain, since he cannot predict what will happen in the summer.

He told AS: “At Valencia, I continue to work hard on endurance, physicality, in case I have to come back, to be prepared.

“I belong to Tottenham and they are the ones who have to decide. It’s not up to me. That will depend on the clubs.”

It is now clear what factors the situation is exactly depending on. Gil will have to wait and see while continuing to give his all for Valencia.

His contract back in north London runs until 2026.
