Tottenham man’s efforts ‘were not enough’, as he admits future is out of his hands

Bryan Gil Valencia February 2022

Bryan Gil says his future is totally out of his own hands, but the Tottenham winger says he will be “prepared” if he does return to the capital.

Gil joined Valencia on loan on transfer deadline day in January. The 21-year-old only joined Spurs in the summer from Sevilla as part of a deal that saw Erik Lamela go the other way.

He made 20 appearances for the club in all competitions during the first half of the season. But he did not start a game in the Premier League and in fact featured for just 86 minutes in nine matches.

But after Antonio Conte took charge he managed just 30 minutes of action and the Italian coach admitted Gil had an issue with the physical aspect of English football.

“You can be good with quality. And you can be a creative player, but at the same time you have to be strong physically. You have to run a lot, to be resilient,” said Conte last month.

“The impact of this league is not simple. It’s not simple. For this reason, the market, before signing a player, you have to check many aspects and not going on emotional things.”

So in search of more game time Gil headed back to LaLiga and the Spain U21 international has made five starts in all competitions.

Gil is in line to play against Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday in the Copa del Rey semi-final clash second leg.

Ahead of that game, he told AS: “I came to Valencia to be able to fight to play matches like this.

“For me, winning a title at my age would be a dream and I knew that Valencia was in the fight to reach the final. Obviously, I came because at Tottenham I wasn’t playing the minutes that every player wants and here they told me that if I earned them, I would have them.”

Gil also referenced the physicality of the Premier League which he said is “very noticeable”.

Gil says he noticed intensity of Premier League

“In the Premier League, training sessions are very physical, very hard. And it has helped me not to notice fatigue now,” Gil added, via Sport Witness.

“Yes. It is [physicality] very noticeable, really. It is a slightly higher level of intensity. I physically noticed it. The adaptation for me was difficult. It is a very physical football, back and forth. Being there has been good for me. I am more mature.

“I changed habits like eating, I had a chef at home and I gained two kilos. Even so, I noticed that it was not enough for the physical level that exists in the Premier League.

“At Valencia, I continue to work hard on endurance, physicality, in case I have to come back, to be prepared.

“I belong to Tottenham and they are the ones who have to decide. It’s not up to me. That will depend on the clubs [Gil staying at Valencia beyond this season].”
