Chelsea, Tottenham battle to sign Nicolo Zaniolo takes sudden turn with talks set to open

An update regarding the situation of Nicolo Zaniolo at Roma could leave interested sides Chelsea and Tottenham disappointed.
Zaniolo has been the subject of reported interest from a number of sides of late. The Premier League has seemed his most likely destination if he is to move on, with Chelsea and Tottenham the most heavily linked.
The latter have seemed the most interested side. Indeed, Antonio Conte’s side reportedly placed a bid for the forward not long ago.
However, reports that followed stated that Jose Mourinho was keen for him to remain in Rome. It is clear to see why, too, given the form he was in for much of last season.
Zaniolo netted eight goals and provided nine assists in all competitions. He also played a starring role in Roma’s triumphant UEFA Conference League campaign, contributing to eight goals and scoring the winner in the final.
It seems the Italian side are now ramping up their efforts to keep their star with them.
Tuttomercatoweb reports that they are planning to open contract talks. They explain they will be held after the transfer window has closed.
The report states that Zaniolo could be tied down for as long as an extra five years.
However, given those talks are set to be opened after the transfer window, there is still a chance he could move on.
It remains to be seen whether either of Chelsea or Tottenham will attempt to prise him away before the window closes.
Zaniolo not essential for either side
While Zaniolo is clearly a top player, which he proved last season, both interested sides could cope without. Chelsea’s front line has been boosted by the addition of Raheem Sterling over the summer.
The Blues adding him into the mix with the likes of Mason Mount, Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic has upped their quality.
Similarly, Tottenham’s attack is rife with star quality. Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son and Dejan Kulusevki formed a potent front line last season.
Indeed, Zaniolo would add to the depth at both clubs. However, he would not be head and shoulders above any of the regular starters at either side just yet.

Spurs interested in Nicolo Zaniolo
Spurs are looking into Roma's Nicolo Zaniolo as he could be available this summer.
