Graeme Souness claimed Chelsea haven’t signed the players they truly wanted, while Karen Carney explained how Tottenham have acted like a “big club” this summer.

Tottenham and Chelsea have both made superb additions in the transfer market this summer, though their approaches have differed.

Spurs conducted the bulk of their business bright and early. Indeed, they signed six first-teamers before July 19 to ensure Antonio Conte got a full pre-season with his new charges.

By contrast, Chelsea’s first major arrival – Raheem Sterling – did not sign until July 13. Kalidou Koulibaly, Marc Cucurella and Carney Chukwuemeka have followed from a first-team perspective, though plenty of irons remain in the fire despite the season already being underway.

Indeed, moves for Wesley Fofana, Frenkie de Jong and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are either all being worked on or heavily speculated.

Ahead of the Premier League clash between the London rivals on Sunday, Sky pundits Souness and Carney were asked about the state of the two clubs and who is moving in the right direction.

Firstly, Souness claimed Chelsea are short of goals despite the Sterling arrival. The ex-Man City forward is a reliable poacher, though has only cracked the 20 league goals mark in one season.

Souness reckons they need a Harry Kane type addition to complete them and to get back amongst Liverpool and Man City.

Chelsea need 20+ goals striker – Souness

“From Chelsea’s point of view, they’re a team that’s used to being successful,” said Souness.

“The amount of changes and upheaval that’s taken place in this football club is enormous. They’ll be looking to get back on to a level keel and see where it takes them.

“I don’t think they’ve brought in the players they really wanted. I think ideally they need more goals.

“Sterling scores about 15 goals a season… at this level you’re looking for someone that gets you 20+, you’re looking for a Harry Kane type. They haven’t got that.

“They thought Lukaku [would’ve been] that but that’s withered and gone away.

“They’re still searching, they don’t really know where they are. There’s more questions about them than what Tottenham have.

“I think Tottenham are a team on the up and they’ve got a great manager.”

Tottenham business praised

When fellow pundit Karen Carney was asked if Spurs have enjoyed the better summer thus far, she explained why they’re the ones who have acted like a big club.

“I think so,” said Carney. “They’ve thrown their weight around like a big club.

“They got their signings in early and got the scrapbook out and went for experienced players.”
