Tottenham confirm Clement Lenglet signing as defender joins on loan from Barcelona

Clement Lenglet of Tottenham

Tottenham have made their fifth signing of the summer, with Clement Lenglet joining the club on a season-long loan from Barcelona.

Lenglet has been linked with Arsenal and Newcastle in the last few months. But Tottenham began negotiations with Barcelona to sign him recently and soon put themselves in a strong position.

The transfer has now been confirmed by Tottenham. A club statement read: ‘We are delighted to announce the signing of Clement Lenglet on a season-long loan from Barcelona, subject to international clearance and a work permit.’

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reveals it is a straight loan. That means no option to buy is included as part of the deal.

Lenglet will strengthen Antonio Conte’s defensive options as Spurs aim to improve on their fourth-placed finish last season.

The France international will compete with Cristian Romero, Eric Dier, Ben Davies and Davinson Sanchez for a starting spot. Conte can also use Japhet Tanganga and Joe Rodon if needed.

Spurs have enjoyed an impressive transfer window, capturing Ivan Perisic and Fraser Forster on free transfers.

They have also spent £25m on Yves Bissouma and £60m on Richarlison, who have joined from Brighton and Everton respectively.
