Tottenham insider claims centre-back will be told thanks but no thanks as Antonio Conte plots massive upgrade

Clement Lenglet, Cristian Romero Tottenham

Tottenham will not look to sign Clement Lenglet on a permanent basis when his loan deal ends and will target a major centre-back upgrade instead, according to a club insider.

The 27-year-old joined the club on loan from Barcelona over the summer after sporting director Fabio Paratici had tried and failed to bring in one of a number of top Antonio Conte targets.

Lenglet has now started five of the club’s last six games and has largely impressed.

However, Spurs insider John Wenham claims that the north London club will not do a permanent deal for the player.

Despite being impressed by the France international, he believes Conte wants to upgrade the position further.

Speaking to Football Insider, Wenham said: “I have said that I am a fan of Lenglet.

“In the summer, it was made abundantly clear, Tottenham leaked it to selected journalists, that we were looking to upgrade the side.

“We were looking for a top table defender, Bastoni, Gvardiol. Davies is a little bit below that level and I think Lenglet is the same level as Davies.”

Wenham adds that while Lenglet has performed just as well as Davies, that is not quite good enough to earn a longer stay.

Lenglet has done nothing wrong

“I feel a bit bad saying this but Lenglet is not an improvement on what we have got. He is as good as Davies and that’s fine for a team who are finishing in the top four.”

“That’s a compliment to him because Davies has been playing in the Premier League for 10 years. But he is not pushing us like Dier or Romero does.

“It’s a bit harsh on him but I think he will play this season and do well but now Davies counts as homegrown in Champions League squads and Lenglet is only on loan, I could see us going in for another top-level centre-back.

“Lenglet will be told thanks for everything and will go on his way. That is harsh because he’s good and I like him but he isn’t better than what we have.”

Gvardiol remains a top Tottenham target

One player who Conte was keen to get on board ahead of Lenglet was RB Leipzig star Josko Gvardiol. And it appears the Croatian is still a major target for Paratici and Conte.

A report on Thursday claimed that Tottenham are still monitoring the 20-year-old, who is a natural fit for the left-sided role in Conte’s back three.

Football Insider claims that scouts from Spurs were in attendance for Leipzig’s clash at Celtic on Tuesday evening. And the centre-back impressed as the German outfit cruised to a 2-0 win in Glasgow.

Gvardiol has been on Spurs’ radar since his time at Dinamo Zagreb. However, Leipzig won the race to sign for his signature in 2020 for £18million on a buy-to-loan deal.

The 12-times capped Croatia international only signed a new Leipzig contract on September 1, which will make signing him tougher.

His new deal runs out in 2027 and reportedly has a fairly reasonable release clause of £44million.

Tottenham are back in Premier League action when they host Everton on Saturday evening.
