Cody Gakpo joins Antonio Conte watchlist as Tottenham make first move ahead of Arsenal, Leeds

Tottenham Hotspurs are reportedly the latest club to join the race for highly-rated PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo.

Gakpo has been named as a target for numerous clubs this summer.  Last season, the 23-year-old bagged 12 goals and a further 13 assists in 27 games for PSV, putting a number of clubs on notice. Now, Spurs are the latest to join the race as Antonio Conte aims to bolster his attack.

According to Sky Sports, Spurs have already made the first move in their bid for the youngster.

The North London club have submitted an enquiry to find out Gakpo’s potential cost, and therefore expressing their interest to PSV.

They are not the only club inside the top flight to be keen on such a deal. Chelsea and Arsenal have also been long-term admirers of the Dutch international.

Leeds United also staked their claim in the race as reported earlier this week. Jesse Marsch is on the hunt for a potential Raphinha replacement.

It was Spurs’ front three that played a major role in securing a top four finish last season. In the league, Tottenham bagged 69 goals from 38 games.

The top four finish means they play Champions League football next season, which could prove a decisive factor in the Gakpo saga.

Wit Arsenal finishing fifth, they now face Europa League action next season instead. Leeds United are without any European football, and Chelsea are looking at a number of different targets in Gakpo’s position.

That being said, the attractiveness of Champions League football could persuade the winger to make the move over to Conte’s squad next season.

It has not yet been reported what response PSV have given to Spurs over the enquiry.

Cody Gakpo not the only Spurs option

Regardless of whether they can land Gakpo over competitors, it seems Conte is set on extending his front three otpions.

The report also suggests Spurs are keen on Jack Harrison, Richarlison, Nicolo Zaniolo and Raphinha.

The hope is that with more options at the front, Tottenham will be able to compete with the likes of Man City and Liverpool.

The club have already landed Ivan Perisic as a defensive wing-back option, and also signed Yves Bissouma for £25m.

If they were to land Gakpo or any one of these options, it would show that the club are serious about competing at the top.
