Former Tottenham boss labels ‘aggressive’ star ‘a major plus’ for Antonio Conte this season

Former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood has lauded the ‘very aggressive’ Cristian Romero for how well the centre-back has settled in at the club.

Romero arrived on loan with an option to buy last summer when Nuno Espirito Santo was still at the helm and apart from a three-month spell when he was on the sidelines through injury, the Argentine has proved a big hit in north London.

Tottenham were on the lookout for a commanding new central defender after allowing Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld to leave. And Romero, 23, has so far belied his age with how he has adapted to the English game.

To that end, Sherwood believes his old club have struck gold with the former Juventus man. His comments come after watching Romero go toe-to-toe with a player who has caused the Spurs defence all sorts of problems in the past in Michail Antonio.

The defender played a starring role in the 3-1 win over West Ham on Sunday. The victory boosted Tottenham’s top-four hopes and Sherwood cited Romero for his role in the victory.

He told Premier League Productions: “I think a special mention has to go to Romero in there. I think he’s fantastic. He’s really settled into the Premier League.

“I think when someone comes off, he’s very aggressive in his defending. He is a major plus for this Tottenham side.”

Conte to target another centre-back

Despite Romero’s presence, Antonio Conte is still expected to add another centre-back to his squad this summer.

Eric Dier and Ben Davies have performed well at times but are still prone to glaring errors. With that in mind, Conte wants another top-class star to compliment what he already has.

The likes of Stefan De Vrij and Gleison Bremer continue to be linked with Spurs. However, it remains to be scene whether Conte can persuade either player to join him in England.
