‘Don’t get it twisted’ – Levy slammed for creating huge, deep-rooted Tottenham problem

Tottenham need to invest more in their team if they are to get back to where they were at the height of Mauricio Pochettino’s reign, pundits have claimed.

Spurs were close to the Premier League title under the Argentine, finishing second in 2016. What’s more, they reached the Champions League final in 2019. Since then, though, they have suffered a tough two years.

Jose Mourinho has come and gone, failing to get the club back on track.

Indeed, Nuno Espirito Santo is now in charge, but he will need further time to embed his ideas and progress the team.

Chairman Daniel Levy has come in for his fair share of criticism in recent years. While he has overseen new facilities such as the stadium, he has been questioned for his lack of first-team investment.

Speaking to Sky Sports, former Spurs and Newcastle star David Ginola had his say on the club’s situation.

“The team is going to be fine, but when you look at this new era of Newcastle and you think about Spurs, you think, ‘Will it be enough for Spurs in terms of money to invest in some players to attract players too?'” he said.

“It is also vital for a club to be able to attract players, it’s not only having the money. If the player doesn’t want to come and play for you, there’s no way you have a chance to play with the best players.

Tottenham are said to be interested in Napoli's Lorenzo Insigne, with more news on Sam Johnstone links and Nuno Espirito Santo.

“For Spurs, it’s the opposite. They’ve got all the infrastructure to be a great club, but now they need to attract the best players.

“Without enough money, you will not be able to do so. I can’t believe I’m talking like that.”

Ginola was speaking after Tottenham claimed a 3-1 victory over Newcastle. Spurs came from behind for their second win in a row.

Tottenham need change of plan

Despite Nuno insisting he can see progress in his post-match interview, Kieron Dyer slammed Levy for his model of developing – then selling – world-class talent.

He also warned that the most recent win will not make the supporters more upbeat about the direction of their club.

“This result is not going to change the fans’ mind. They’ve beaten a poor Newcastle team,” Dyer said. “It was only two years ago they finished second in the league, they’re in the Champions League final.

“Tottenham are miles away from that, don’t get it twisted from this result.

“Tottenham, where they were two or three years ago to where they are today, they are miles apart. So something has gone wrong.

“Daniel Levy, we know he’s tight with the purse strings, the way they recruit players they go all on data. Tottenham produce world-class players and sell them on.”

It was then pointed out that Levy rejected Manchester City’s summer advances for Harry Kane.

Jamie Redknapp said that he “didn’t understand” why Levy did not sell the England captain.
