Daniel Levy defiant over Antonio Conte future despite claims he is ‘finished’ at Tottenham

Daniel Levy, Tottenham chairman, January 2020

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy remains defiant and is reportedly expecting Antonio Conte to stay, despite recent claims suggesting otherwise.

The North London outfit enjoyed a fantastic last-gasp victory over Manchester City last weekend, only to lose 1-0 to Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday. That defeat is their fourth in the last five Premier League fixtures.

Journalist and commentator Sam Matterface claims Conte is planning to walk away from Tottenham as a result of the latest setback.

“I’ve just spoken to Antonio Conte,” Matterface said, while appearing on talkSPORT.

“He has indicated that his tenure as Tottenham manager may be coming to an end.

“The way he was talking to me, he suggested he needs to speak to the club to come up with a solution. He talked about his salary and the fact Tottenham had lost four of the last five games, and that was unacceptable. He wasn’t used to it.

“I asked him if he was thinking about resignation and he said ‘I need to speak to the club’. The last thing I asked him before I walked out of the interview was ‘are you going to be the manager when I turn up to Elland Road on Saturday for Leeds against Spurs?’

“He said ‘I’ve finished, I’ve finished, I’m walking away’.”

Antonio Conte future in serious doubt

Fellow talkSPORT pundit Jamie O’Hara did interject, saying Conte may have just been saying he was done with the interview. But Matterface is adamant the Italian is ‘incredibly unhappy’ at Spurs.

The Daily Mail provide an update on Conte’s situation. They claim Levy and the board are confident Conte will remain at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham have set a price of £25m for Hojbjerg this summer with Chelsea, Manchester United and Roma potentially interested

They are expecting him to take charge of the trip to Leeds this weekend, where Spurs will attempt to bounce back once again.

Levy is also willing to back the manager with transfer funds in the summer so that he can improve the squad, which is certainly needed.

Pundit backs duo to improve Spurs fortunes

Meanwhile, a pundit believes centre-back duo Eric Dier and Cristian Romero can help ease the crisis Conte is facing.

“They’ve not played that much, Dier and Romero,” Noel Whelan told Football Insider.

“They’ve both had injury problems. This is now the part of the season where you need to get that partnership going.

“It’s the best duo at the back – it’s the partnership you want, I’m telling you, and they are the answer. You could already see the improvement when Dier came back in. He was organising, pulling people around, telling people to mark.

“I think they’ve sorely missed him and he can certainly kick on now with Romero next to him.

“He’s taken some criticism, but he’s really taken up the mantle and become that leader under Conte.”
