Tottenham to complete masterful transfer with electric World Cup ace to oust disastrous signing
Tottenham could complete a brilliant swap deal with Inter Milan amid claims the Serie A giants want to capture Emerson Royal.
Emerson left Barcelona in August 2021 when Tottenham came calling for him. According to BBC Sport, Tottenham spent €30million (£25.8m) to sign Emerson on a five-year contract, with the Brazilian replacing Serge Aurier in the squad.
Emerson has gone on to make 59 appearances in a Spurs shirt, registering a single goal and two assists. He has been hugely disappointing in north London, failing to convince fans on his defensive or attacking abilities.
The right-back has also made several big mistakes leading to goals, while he picked up a red card in the north London derby on October 1. That did Antonio Conte’s side no favours as they lost 3-1.
If Spurs want to make themselves real contenders for the Premier League title, they need to offload Emerson and bring in a new player in his position. Of course, Matt Doherty and Djed Spence are available there too, but Doherty isn’t up to scratch either and Spence has little chance of making it under Conte.
A top signing for Spurs would be Inter’s Denzel Dumfries. He is an exciting right wing-back who notched five goals and five assists in Serie A last season. Plus, he has impressed while representing the Netherlands at both Euro 2020 and the Qatar World Cup.
Spurs have regularly been linked with Dumfries as he is the perfect solution to their right-back problems. Unfortunately for Conte, Manchester United and Chelsea are also in pursuit of him. And according to a recent update from Italy, it is Chelsea who are winning the race right now.
That could be about to change though. Spurs Web, who cite a report from another Italian source in the form of Corriere dello Sport, claim Inter have lined up Emerson as a potential replacement for Dumfries at the San Siro.
Tottenham swap deal a possibility
It seems they are gradually getting used to the fact Dumfries will likely be leaving them, and they believe Emerson to be a good option to replace him. Perhaps Inter boss Simone Inzaghi feels he can get the best out of the Spurs flop, unlike Conte.
Inter targeting Emerson sets up the possibility of a player-plus-deal involving Dumfries. Spurs could ship Emerson off to Italy, and send some money across as well, to capture Dumfries.
This would be a fantastic piece of business. It would see Conte replace an underwhelming signing with a top-class international player.
This is clearly a great idea, but there are some big questions about it. For example, why would Inter want to sign Emerson after his sub-par performances for Spurs over the past year?
For them to let Dumfries go and bring in Emerson as his successor would be a huge downgrade. Emerson has far less attacking threat than Dumfries, so Inter’s amounts of goals could decrease.
Another factor to consider is whether Dumfries would join Spurs over Man Utd or Chelsea. The latter two clubs have won big trophies in the last 10 years. Spurs, in contrast, haven’t lifted any silverware since the 2008 League Cup.
Meanwhile, Liverpool and Spurs are among the Premier League sides ready to submit contract offers to a Serie A star, TEAMtalk understands.
