Tottenham Hotspur believe they will win the race for key Antonio Conte target, Djed Spence, according to a report.
Spence spent the 2021-22 season on loan at Nottingham Forest from Middlesbrough. While his parent club finished just outside the play-offs, Spence helped Forest win promotion to the Premier League.
The right-back earned plenty of admirers along the course of his 46-appearance season. Scoring three goals and assisting five more, he has been linked with a Premier League transfer in the aftermath.
As things stand, he is contracted to Middlesbrough for two more seasons. But they are willing to cash in now while Spence’s stock is high and they have Isaiah Jones for themselves.
Forest have understandably been showing an interest in turning Spence’s loan permanent. However, Tottenham have established themselves as a major threat in the battle for the 21-year-old.
And now, the Northern Echo is reporting that Tottenham are leading the race for Spence’s signature. They have an “advanced” interest and a “confidence” they will get the deal done, the report claims.
Their pursuit is being driven by head coach Conte, who wants Tottenham to do “whatever it takes” to sign Spence.
He currently has Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty available to him as options at right wing-back. It is an area of the squad he wants to upgrade within a busy summer transfer window.
Therefore, Tottenham are trying to win the battle for Spence.
Djed Spence wanted man as Nottingham Forest gain promotion

In turn, the Northern Echo claims that Nottingham Forest are on the lookout for alternatives, if they cannot keep Spence. One option is Issa Kabore.
The Burkina Faso international has been on the books of Manchester City since 2020. However, he has been enduring loan spells with Mechelen and Troyes.
Nottinghamshire Live has listed Kabore as a potential target for Forest and the Northern Echo backs this up. City’s plan is to loan Kabore out again next season, this time in the Premier League.
After a long absence, Forest can now provide that platform. Therefore, Kabore could be their replacement for Spence.
Everyone could benefit from Djed Spence chain of events
In turn, every club in the transfer chain could be happy. Boro will earn a windfall and continue with Jones, Forest could accommodate Kabore and Tottenham might just land Spence.
But perhaps the happiest party with the outcome would be Spence himself. Going from the Championship to the Champions League would be a big step up.
He deserves a chance at a higher level after how he has done for Forest in 2021-22. What’s more, at Tottenham, he would stand a good chance of getting gametime due to the inconsistency of Emerson and Doherty.
At his age, he has plenty of room to develop. It shows Spurs are planning across the board despite a theory that Conte would have them acquiring older players like Ivan Perisic on the opposite flank.
Time will tell if they can get Spence and if he rewards their faith.
