Levy, Paratici transfer concerns for Djed Spence grow as Tottenham try new route to break deadlock

Tottenham have growing frustrations over their transfer pursuit of Middlesbrough full-back Djed Spence, a report has claimed.

Spurs have enjoyed an impressive summer transfer window so far, but boss Antonio Conte has more work to do. Despite additions in midfield, defence and attack, wing-back remains a concern.

Tottenham have added Ivan Perisic and the Croatian, who won Serie A with Conte in 2021, will prove a valuable asset.

However, right wing-back remains one of Tottenham‘s unresolved transfer needs.

And Boro full-back Spence is Conte’s top target. The 21-year-old impressed on loan at Nottingham Forest last season, proving a major driving force in their Premier League promotion.

Previous reports detailed how Tottenham believed they were close to wrapping up a £20million deal for Spence. Indeed, Spurs reportedly hoped to be able to give him a place on their pre-season tour in South Korea.

According to the Evening Standard, though, there is ‘no prospect’ of Spence linking up with Spurs before that deadline.

Tottenham and Middlesbrough are ‘continuing negotiations’ but are ‘locked in talks’ as they try to seek a resolution.

Tottenham, led at the top by chairman Daniel Levy and director of football Fabio Paratici, are therefore discussing the ‘finer details’ of a broad deal to try and resolve the impasse.

The earlier report on the situation claimed that Tottenham’s latest offer was £15million up front with £5million in add-ons.

Middlesbrough boss Chris Wilder said last week that he hoped the Spurs talks over Spence would come to a “quick resolution” that would “help everybody”.

Wilder added, though, that he would gladly retain Spence for next season to help Boro’s Premier League push, in the same way Forest used him last term.

Despite the growing frustrations on all sides, Spence to Tottenham is surely not far away.

A total package of £20million will please Boro, who will be looking to get the best out of their star asset given he has two years left on his contract.

But it is very unlikely that Spence stays with Middlesbrough into next season.

He has impressed in the Championship but now deserves a step up to the Premier League.

And in Conte’s famed wing-back system, he will get plenty of opportunities to impress at Tottenham.
