Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has given an insight on why Antonio Conte continues to ignore the talents of Tottenham summer signing Djed Spence.
Spurs chased Spence for over a year before eventually sealing his signing from Middlesbrough in a £12.5million deal, after the player impressed on loan at Nottingham Forest last season.
The 22-year-old really shone in a Forest side that won promotion back to the Premier League.
And while his signing was considered somewhat of a coup, Spence has hardly featured for Conte’s men so far this term.
His absence is even more baffling considering that first-choice right wing-back Emerson Royal has had his struggles. Conte, meanwhile, still does not fully trust backup Matt Doherty against stronger opposition.
And now Romano has lifted the lid on what is going on for the England Under-21 international.
Speaking to CaughtOffside in his Daily Briefing column, Romano gave his thoughts on the situation.
He said: “There’s already speculation about Djed Spence’s future after a difficult start at Tottenham.
“My understanding is that Spence is not playing because Antonio Conte wants experienced players and Spence is considered a talent for the future. Tottenham were always frontrunners in the summer. And they are convinced he’s going to be a great investment for the future of the club.
“In terms of a January loan, no decision has been made yet; we will see what happens when Conte meets the board and decides the next steps.”
Spence tipped for January loan
Romano adds that Conte is expected to speak to the Tottenham board soon about the player’s future.
Indeed, speculation is growing that Spence could be loaned out to get some game time in January.
If that happens then there is every chance that Conte will bring in another player to compete for the position.
Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries is known to be on the Italian’s radar. Indeed, a fee in the region of £26million is being mooted.
The Netherlands international would certainly be an upgrade over Conte’s options, and Inter are said to be keen on doing business.
Former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson is clearly a fan of the player, telling Football Insider: “I have watched him very closely. He is brilliant. He is athletic and has great ability going forward but he can also defend.
“The way Conte wants to play, he would be perfect. I would love to see him at Tottenham.”
Conte’s men are back in action on Boxing Day when they head to London rivals Brentford.
