Fabrizio Romano provides telling update on proposed Tottenham move for ‘fantastic’ Djed Spence

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Middlesbrough right-back Djed Spence’s move to Tottenham this summer.

The full-back made a huge impression on loan at Nottingham Forest last season as the City Ground outfit recovered from a poor start to the campaign to win promotion back to the Premier League under Steve Cooper.

That led to talk of a permanent Forest switch. However, Spurs have been admirers of the player for some time and are believed to be in the box seat for his signature.

And according to Romano, Spence is keen on heading to north London.

However, he is still waiting for Tottenham to make an official bid for his services – with Spence valued at between £20-25million.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said: “They [Tottenham] are showing their ambition to Antonio Conte, waiting for more signings to come.

“Let’s remind that Djed Spence from Middlesbrough is a serious possibility they are considering.

“But there’s still no official bid, so the player is waiting.

“He’s of course waiting for Tottenham as a big possibility to play Champions League football after a fantastic season with Nottingham Forest.”

Spence fits perfectly in Conte system

Spence’s attacking style would certainly fit perfectly into Conte’s 3-4-3 system. That is despite the fact that he’s largely played in a back four at Boro and Forest.

The England Under-21 star has pace to burn and notched three goals and five assists from full-back last term.

If he does arrive in north London, then he will likely replace Emerson Royal in Conte’s squad.

The Brazilian improved as the season went on. However, reports claim he’s not done enough to earn another season at Tottenham.

While that does appear harsh, Conte is building a squad for a Champions League return. And he believes Spence is good enough to take that huge step up.

Two veteran stars have already been snapped up in Ivan Perisic and Fraser Forster. Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma is also expected to have a medical on Thursday before completing a £25m switch.
