Tottenham rival Man Utd for Mamardashvili transfer due to Valencia vulnerability

Tottenham Hotspur have joined the race for Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who is a member of a whole squad up for sale, according to a report.
Valencia are in a bit of turmoil at present and need to raise funds urgently. With that in mind, they are listening to offers for any of their players. Even their goalkeeper, who only joined six months ago, could be sacrificed.
Mamardashvili was recently suggested as a transfer target for Manchester United. Now, though, it has been unearthed that Tottenham are keen on him too.
This is according to Marca, who describe Mamardashvili as being a potential successor to Hugo Lloris.
Tottenham are in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer to compete with their club captain. Lloris is now 35 years old; although under contract for another two seasons, Spurs want stronger competition for him.
They have had Pierluigi Gollini on loan from Atalanta this season and can keep him if they wish. But the Italian has admirers back in Serie A as well.
Fraser Forster will be adding to the Tottenham goalkeeping department when his Southampton contract expires. But again, a younger option to push Lloris is required.
At the age of 21, Mamardashvili has a whole career ahead of him. He played 21 times for Valencia after joining them from Dinamo Tbilisi in his native Georgia mid-season. From those appearances, he only conceded 22 goals.
In La Liga, he kept eight clean sheets from 18 appearances. The 6’5″ giant is therefore making his presence known in the Mestalla goal.
But he could soon trade it for one in the Premier League if an appropriate offer arrives to Valencia. The report confirms Man Utd remain interested, but so are Tottenham.
Spurs could have an advantage, though, due to the communication line they opened with Valencia when sending Bryan Gil on loan in January.
There has been no formal offer as yet for Mamardashvili. In addition, Gil’s long-term status remains up for grabs.
Tottenham could take Mamardashvili opportunity
While there are more household names on the market, Mamardashvili certainly seems to have made an impression during his short time in Spain.
At his age, there is room for him to improve further and develop on a bigger stage. Tottenham have Champions League football on offer, although Lloris would likely remain the starter for that.
Still, it could be an interesting project for him to join. And from the club’s perspective, it would be opportunistic to take him while Valencia are at risk.
If that can help them work out what to do with Gil, too, it would be beneficial to all parties.
Yet Tottenham should still rely on Lloris for now and will be strengthened by the addition of Forster as a backup. If they can find a second in command between them, that area of their squad would be sorted.
