Harry Kane: David Ornstein drops bombshell as Tottenham accept Bayern Munich offer while striker’s true stance emerges
England captain Harry Kane is a target for Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich have finally succeeded with a bid for Harry Kane in what could be one of the biggest transfers of the summer, David Ornstein has revealed.
Kane is into the final year of his contract with Tottenham, which he has not been willing to extend. It has led to serious interest from Bayern, who recently sold Sadio Mane to Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia. A move to the Bundesliga champions would probably help the England captain end his long wait for major honours.
However, Tottenham have set a high asking price for their all-time leading goalscorer. The momentum shifted in Bayern’s favour, though, when owner Joe Lewis told chairman Daniel Levy not to let Kane leave for free next year.
And now, Bayern have had a bid accepted by Tottenham, according to Ornstein. In a report for The Athletic, the trusted journalist has revealed that Spurs said yes to their offer of more than €100m (£86.4m) on Wednesday.
It is now up to Bayern and Kane to come to an agreement on personal terms. However, Ornstein has acknowledged that the 30-year-old has actually been leaning towards staying at Spurs.
Staying with Tottenham for the final year of his contract may allow him to explore a wide range of lucrative options on a free transfer next year.
However, the concrete offer from Bayern now gives him something serious to think about. And it has come just in time for him, since he wanted to resolve his future before the start of the Premier League season.
Tottenham will commence their campaign away at Brentford on Sunday. It remains to be seen if Kane will still be at their disposal by then.
He came through the Tottenham academy and has gone on to make 435 appearances for their senior team, scoring 280 goals along the way. He is also the all-time leading scorer for his country, so would be a high-profile addition for Bayern.
Kane to fill Bayern striker void if he agrees to move
The German giants sold Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona last summer and things never really worked out for ex-Liverpool star Mane in his place.
Now, they have reportedly prepared a long-term contract proposal – going against their usual policy for players in their 30s – for Kane.
Various factors will have to be considered by their target, who is expecting his fourth child with his wife, Kate Goodland.
Bayern are aiming to accommodate Kane, though, by tempting him to uproot to Germany. Thomas Tuchel’s side will start their defence of their Bundesliga title away at Werder Bremen on August 18.
To replace Kane, Tottenham have been linked with a variety of options, such as Porto’s Mehdi Taremi.
