Harry Kane: England’s new record scorer told time right for Tottenham exit by Steven Gerrard after greatest achievement

Harry Kane celebrating for England

Harry Kane has become England’s all-time leading goalscorer after netting a penalty against Italy – and Steven Gerrard used the moment to suggest the striker should be considering leaving Tottenham Hotspur.

Kane was level on 53 goals with Wayne Rooney as England’s Euro 2024 qualification campaign began. He broke the record on the verge of half time against Italy when scoring from the penalty spot.

It came after he missed his most recent penalty for England in the World Cup defeat to France.

Now, Kane stands alone as England’s all-time leading goalscorer, which is quite the achievement by the age of 29.

Reacting to his accomplishment on Channel 4‘s coverage, former England midfielder Gerrard said: “Incredible moment.

“Ironic it coming in the form of a penalty but he deserved that.

“You could see in the pre-match interview he was so determined to make up for that penalty miss in the winter.

“But his all-round play has been fantastic and I’m so pleased for him. Congratulations.”

Despite the miss against France, Kane has earned a reputation as an exceptional penalty taker, which he has proven again.

Gerrard pointed out how the Tottenham striker makes himself effective from 12 yards, before turning the focus to his future at club level.

‘Maybe it is time’ for Harry Kane to change clubs

Gerrard added: “It’s an incredible penalty, precise. He loves taking the side netting off.

“He’s one of the best penalty takers in the world. That’s why it was such a surprise when it happened to him in the World Cup.

“But you’re talking about greatness, you’re talking about one of the best number nines in the world right now, and that’s the reason why every transfer window he’s heard in terms of all the talks because, you know, maybe it is time. Maybe it is time for him to move on.”

Gerrard didn’t elaborate any further on why he feels Kane could be approaching the end of his spell with Spurs.

Kane has spent his entire career owned by Tottenham, also becoming their record scorer. He is under contract there until 2024. Having failed to win silverware with Spurs, some are wondering if he should leave them this summer.

Man Utd have been linked with the England captain, for example, who also has suitors abroad but may be wanting to pursue the all-time Premier League goalscoring record next.

For now, though, Kane will be revelling in his accomplishment at scoring more goals for his country than any other player ever. An achievement like that should be the only thing at the forefront of his mind at this moment in time.
