Harry Kane replacement: Gary Lineker names star Tottenham should ‘take a punt on’ after England captain’s departure

Adam Webster, Solly March, Lewis Dunk and Evan Ferguson of Brighton

Gary Lineker feels Tottenham should look to sign Brighton striker Evan Ferguson to fill the void left by the departure of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich.

Kane, 30, has now quit north London for Bavaria after being attached to the club since the age of 11. The England captain made 435 appearances in all competitions, scoring 280 goals, 213 of them in the Premier League. The Walthamstow-born ace is only 47 shy of Alan Shearer’s all-time record of 260 Premier League goals.

But his pursuit of the Match of The Day pundit is now on hold. Kane had just one year left on his Spurs deal.

And, rather than lose him for nothing next summer, Daniel Levy opted to sell him to the Bundesliga giants.

Manchester United had been linked but withdrew from the race after it became clear Spurs did not want to sell to a Premier League rival.

The media has reacted to the veteran striker’s move. And Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has delivered a downbeat verdict on how they might fare in 2023-2024.

The former Arsenal and England midfielder insisted ‘they’re 100 per cent a bottom half team if he leaves.’

With that in mind, the hunt will now be on for Kane’s successor. Many names have been put forward. And Lineker has now had his say on the issue.

Ferguson a player in demand

The 62-year-old presenter knows a thing or two about scoring goals. He watched Ferguson during 19 top-flight appearances last term.

And, having observed the youngster open his season account late on in the Seagulls 4-1 demolition of Luton, wants Tottenham to snap him up.

He tweeted: “Evan Ferguson scores in Fergie time. He’s a born goalscorer.

“If I was in charge of recruitment at @SpursOfficial I’d take a punt on him as Kane’s replacement. Apologies to @OfficialBHAFC fans.”

Spurs have already been linked with the Republic of Ireland international.

But they are not the only top-flight club said to hold an interest in the talented starlet.

Both Manchester City and Manchester United are also said to be on the case and have been tipped to move next year.

However, it appears as though Lineker feels Spurs should try to steal a march on their rivals and look to sign him this summer.

Whether the Amex outfit would be willing to part company with their prized asset is another matter.

Roberto de Zerbi guided his charges to a sixth-place finish last season. And, as a result, they will play in the Europa League.

The Italian tactician needs a bigger squad for the rigours of a European campaign and has already lost Alexis Mac Allister to Liverpool.

And it seems as though Moises Caicedo might also be on his way. Liverpool and Chelsea are locked in a battle for the Ecuador international’s signature.

He can ill afford to lose another top-quality star despite the arrival of Joao Pedro from Watford and Bart Verbruggen from Anderlecht.
