Harry Kane warms up before Tottenham match

Harry Kane has made his first reference to the upcoming summer transfer window after the conclusion of the 2022/23 season with Tottenham Hotspur.

Kane’s future is going to be one of the big topics of the summer as he enters the final year of his contract with Tottenham. Despite a 4-1 win over Leeds United on the final day, in which Kane was the player of the match, Spurs will not have European football on offer next season.

It could heighten the speculation about his future, especially since one of his main suitors – Man Utd – will have Champions League football on offer in contrast.

Daniel Levy will not want to sell his star striker under any circumstances, though. But it will be interesting to see if Tottenham’s all-time record scorer puts pressure on for an exit.

It didn’t take long after the last final whistle of the season for Kane to be quizzed about his future. Speaking to BT Sport, though, the England captain has insisted his mind is elsewhere at the moment.

“It has been a disappointing season,” Kane told BT Sport. “We can’t let this win dust over that. A lot to work on.

“We have had to show fight in some moments. A club this size should not be finishing eighth and we need to go away, enjoy a break and look how we can improve.”

On the topic of transfer speculation, Kane added: “It is part and parcel of being a footballer, especially when you are at the top of your game. I have focused on this season and helping the team as much as possible.

“I am just looking forward to a nice break and some games with England.”

Harry Kane at the peak of his powers

Kane finished second in the race for the golden boot this season, predictably behind Manchester City’s Erling Haaland. The Tottenham man did set a new record, though, of the most games scored in during a 38-match Premier League season.

Indeed, his final tally of 32 goals in all competitions represents the fourth best return of his career.

At the age of 29, Kane is certainly in his prime and arguably deserves to be at a more competitive club. But there is credit that comes with remaining loyal to a single club, so he will have a lot to weigh up when he starts to think about his future.

As he said, though, right now he is only thinking about England’s upcoming commitments against Malta and North Macedonia in the Euro 2024 qualifiers during the middle of June.
