Harry Kane: New Tottenham price tag emerges as Man Utd, Chelsea discover how to secure Daniel Levy agreement

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has given Harry Kane a new price tag amid interest from Manchester United and Chelsea, according to a report.

Kane was close to leaving Tottenham in summer 2021, as Manchester City were hoping to take him to the Etihad. They made several approaches to Levy but were knocked back at every turn.

Levy told City they would have to spend a whopping £150million to sign Kane due to them being Premier League rivals. A transfer at this price would have made the striker the most expensive player in British history. It would also have put Kane in the top three most expensive transfers of all time, behind only Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

City did not agree with this valuation and ultimately rejected the opportunity to sign Kane. They waited a season before landing Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund in July last year. He cost £51m and has proven to be a sensational signing, having scored 27 goals in just 24 matches this campaign.

Due to Haaland, City no longer hold an interest in signing Kane. But there are other options, should the England captain push to leave north London.

Man Utd are in need of a new striker after Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit and they are looking at Kane as a potential replacement. Of course, they have already brought in Wout Weghorst this month, but he is only a short-term solution.

Chelsea, meanwhile, need a new centre-forward as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang looks past his best. Plus, Graham Potter sees Kai Havertz as more of a second striker, while the Blues are likely to sell Romelu Lukaku this summer.

Man Utd and Chelsea are given hope over capturing Kane due to the fact his Spurs contract expires in June 2024. While a new deal at Spurs could occur, TEAMtalk transfer insider Graeme Bailey believes ‘it is far from certain’ this will happen.

Matt Law of The Telegraph has written an opinion piece titled ‘Why it is time for Harry Kane to leave Tottenham’. And it includes some interesting information on the 29-year-old’s situation.

While Levy is in a slightly weaker negotiating position than in 2021, due Kane’s contract being closer to expiry, he will still demand a huge £100m from Man Utd or Chelsea for his prized asset.

The Spurs chief would much rather deal with a foreign side, such as Paris Saint-Germain. As such, the price for the clubs on the continent will be less.

Levy least wants to sell Kane to Chelsea. After all, they are close London rivals. But he would rather not strengthen Man Utd, either.

Law also provides some insight on what Kane is thinking. The only way Spurs can convince him to stay is by winning a trophy this season.

As they are unlikely to lift the Premier League, this will come down to their Champions League and FA Cup exploits. They will come up against Preston in the FA Cup fourth round on January 28 and face AC Milan in the Champions League round of 16 next month.

Spurs appointing Mauricio Pochettino as manager could also help. He has a great relationship with Kane and is being linked with a Spurs return to replace Antonio Conte.

But if the club misses out on more silverware this season, then even Pochettino would struggle to prevent him from handing in a transfer request. Still, there are five more players that Spurs should be able to build around.

Meanwhile, Spurs have received a boost in their pursuit of an ideal successor to current first-choice goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
