Harry Kane: Tottenham twist as Barcelona make powerplay to rival renewed Man Utd attempt for Bayern target

Harry Kane celebrates scoring Tottenham goal
Barcelona have become keen on the signing of Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur, according to a report – but there is a catch.
Kane is now into the final year of his contract with Tottenham, who are having to face up to the daunting prospect of losing their all-time leading scorer. Bayern Munich have become a serious threat to Tottenham’s chances of keeping the centre-forward.
Sources have claimed Kane would be keen on joining the Bundesliga champions. For it to happen, though, Bayern would need to agree a transfer fee with the striker’s current employers, which is proving difficult.
Amid the stalemate, Kane – who reportedly has no intention of pushing for an exit, despite his interest in making the Bayern move happen – will have to weigh up all his options.
It is becoming more feasible that he might have to run down the final year of his contract with Tottenham if he ultimately wants to leave. Then, he would be able to choose his next destination as a free agent.
According to The Athletic, in that case, Barcelona would be interested in signing Kane. Due to financial reasons, they would struggle to compete for his signature this year, but if they can convince the England captain to hold out for another year, they might try to pick him up for free in 2024.
Barcelona have made a habit of searching for free agents to sign in recent years. Their main centre-forward currently is Robert Lewandowski – the man who left the void at Bayern that Kane could alternatively fill – but he is in the twilight of his career.
Kane could return to Man Utd shortlist
The report also claims that Man Utd could be back in for Kane next year after abandoning their interest in the current transfer window because of Tottenham’s high asking price.
By staying in the Premier League, Kane could continue to pursue the competition’s all-time scoring record. However, what he really wants is to win trophies.
By joining Bayern, who have won the Bundesliga for 11 seasons in a row, that would almost be a guarantee. Barcelona are also a reigning champion of La Liga, while Man Utd got their hands on the Carabao Cup earlier this year.
Honours have been harder to come by at Tottenham, but as the Ange Postecoglou era begins, Kane may have one more season in which to try and end their trophy drought. Where he goes after that, unless he actually decides to renew his stay, remains up for question.
But as long as he maintains the form that saw him score 32 goals last season, Kane should have his pick of elite suitors.
