Tottenham confirm Harry Winks departure as exit-linked midfielder heads to Sampdoria on loan

Harry Winks, Tottenham, January 2022

Tottenham have confirmed that Harry Winks has left the club, in order to go on a season-long loan to Serie A side Sampdoria.

Winks has been linked with an exit from Tottenham for some time. Indeed, his role has dwindled at Spurs during the last few seasons.

His most Premier League appearances in a season were 31, in the 2019/20 campaign. The amount of appearances he has made have dropped significantly since then.

The following season, the midfielder made 15 league appearances. Last season, he made it onto the pitch 19 times in the Premier League.

It has seemed for a while like a move away might be best for him. Multiple clubs from the Premier League and further afield have been linked with the signing.

A move to Everton was mooted, though the Toffees pulled out. That left Sampdoria as the side with the most realistic chance of signing Winks.

Indeed, a move to the Serie A side has now gone through, as confirmed by Tottenham’s official website.

They state that Winks has joined Sampdoria on a season-long loan deal.

He becomes the sixth player that Spurs have allowed to leave on loan this season.

Joe Rodon, Giovani Lo Celso, Sergio Reguilon, Tanguy Ndombele have all also been allowed to leave temporarily. Tottenham also loaned Destiny Ugodie back to Udinese, after they signed him this summer.

Loan transfer good move for Winks

The move away from Tottenham is a good one for Winks. His career seemed to have stagnated at Spurs, as he was not afforded the minutes he would have liked to shine at the club.

A move away represents a fresh start, and an opportunity to prove himself at a new side. He should be given consistent minutes at Sampdoria, and will be given the opportunity to impress.

While it seemed he would have liked to remain in England, a move to Italy will give him a fresh challenge.

Furthermore, should he perform, he could have a space back in the side at Spurs, or could get a transfer to another side.
