Tottenham man offered to Jose Mourinho and Roma despite player’s stance posing serious issue

Tottenham have given Jose Mourinho the chance to reunite with Harry Winks at Roma, according to a report.

Mourinho worked with the central midfielder during his spell in charge of Tottenham between November 2019 and April 2021. The Portuguese manager is now at Roma, whom he helped win the Europa Conference League last season.

Several Tottenham players have been linked with Roma in recent months as part of Antonio Conte’s squad overhaul.

No players have swapped north London for Rome so far. But Conte is still being successful in getting the dead wood out of the squad.

Steven Bergwijn has gone back to the Netherlands by signing for Ajax in a £26.4million (€31.25m) transfer. Joe Rodon has joined Rennes on a season-long loan, while the French club have the option to make it permanent for £16.7m.

Giovani Lo Celso has linked up with Villarreal for the campaign, though Spurs can cut his loan short in January if they wish. Tanguy Ndombele, meanwhile, will play under Luciano Spalletti at Napoli for the campaign. Napoli have the option to sign him on a long-term basis if he manages to rediscover his form.

Winks and Gil could follow these players out of Spurs. Gil is on the verge of returning to Spain with Valencia.

Winks’ future is yet to be finalised though. Sampdoria have been leading the race for his signature in recent days.

But reports claim the Englishman hopes to stay in the Premier League and is ‘expecting’ such an offer to arrive this week.

Clearly, Winks doesn’t want to switch country or leave what is generally known as the best league in the world.

Roma handed Harry Winks opportunity

Nevertheless, Spurs have offered him to Roma. Transfer journalist Nicolo Schira reveals this is the case, as well as some details about the prospective move.

He claims Spurs have given Roma the chance to land Winks on loan with the option to buy. Presumably, the loan would last for a full season and Roma would have the opportunity to purchase Winks next summer.

Mourinho and Roma’s response to the offer is yet to emerge. They have previously discussed including Winks in a player-plus-cash deal for Nicolo Zaniolo, only for these talks to fall through.

It seems Roma like what Winks can offer and may sign him to bolster their midfield ranks.

The Giallorossi signed Gini Wijnaldum on loan from Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month. However, the Dutchman will be out for a long period after breaking his leg in training on Sunday.

This means Roma need to dip back into the transfer market and find a replacement. They have set their sights on Leandro Paredes, Wijnaldum’s PSG team-mate, along with Juventus and Liverpool.

But the 28-year-old is close to joining Juve, which could force Roma to prioritise a deal for Winks instead. However, Winks may ultimately reject Roma if he truly wishes to stay in the Prem.

Meanwhile, Sergio Reguilon could end up in Serie A amid claims one of Roma’s rivals are pushing to sign the left-back.
