Tottenham are expected to sanction an exit for either Emerson Royal or Matt Doherty, or even both, after completing a deal for Djed Spence.
Spurs have agreed a deal to sign England Under-21 right-back Spence from Middlesbrough for an initial £12million, with the transfer expected to be completed over the weekend.
The overall move could end up costing the north London club around £20m after add-ons are included.
And Tottenham insider John Wenham claims his overall could be the end for Royal or Doherty.
Wenham told Football Insider: “You wonder if Conte would get rid of both, if the options were there. We’re talking about going from the two we’ve got at the minute to none, with Djed Spence yet to happen.
“I just wonder if he looks at that and goes: ‘Are they really good enough? Are those two really good enough for where I want to take this football club? I want to take this club to be challenging Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City this coming season.’
“I think they will do, but are those right wing-backs good enough? It just depends on offers, really. If we got offers for either I think we’d sell either or. I think Emerson is the preferred sale because he counts as a non-homegrown player in the squad.”
Emerson played 44 times for Spurs in his first season at the club, scoring once and adding an assist.
Meanwhile, Doherty made 25 appearances, scoring twice and producing four assists before injury cut his campaign short.
It’s fair to say that Spence’s stats stack up better, albeit in a weaker division. He notched three times and added five assists on loan at Nottingham Forest.
Royal exit more likely than Doherty
There is every chance that Conte and sporting director Fabio Paratici will cut their losses with Emerson when Spence arrives.
The Brazilian improved as his first season in English football went on but he was still fairly average at best.
And Tottenham cannot afford average when they go back into the Champions League and look to challenge for the top four again.
Yes, Spence will take some time to settle in but his overall quality in the final third is better than Emerson’s.
Djed Spence is an excellent signing for Spurs
Spurs have agreed a deal with Middlesbrough for Djed Spence.
Add in the fact that Conte loves Doherty’s versatility and ability to also play left wing-back and things don’t look good for Emerson.
If Tottenham can recoup anything like the £22.5million they shelled out for the player then they appear certain to take it.
