James Maddison breaks silence on transfer rumours after Tottenham, Newcastle linked with Leicester star

Leicester attacker James Maddison

James Maddison admits there is ‘a sigh of relief’ now the transfer window is shut, after Tottenham and Newcastle made approaches to sign him from Leicester this summer.

Tottenham are thought to be long-term admirers of the attacking midfielder. And according to Fabrizio Romano, they have ‘excellent relations’ with his agent – which only heightened the rumours.

Rather than Tottenham opening the bidding for Maddison, Newcastle did so on July 30 by putting £40m on the table. However, Leicester swiftly rejected this offer as it didn’t meet their asking price.

Foxes chiefs told their Newcastle counterparts that a deal would only go through if a bid worth £60m was made.

Newcastle didn’t get the lesson though and came back with improved terms worth £50m. This was made up of an initial £45m outlay, plus £5m in add-ons.

Understandably, Leicester pushed the new proposal back. Maddison is a key player for them and they didn’t want to let him go for less than his transfer valuation.

Newcastle walked away from the negotiations once they found out their second offer wouldn’t be enough. There were then rumours of a late Spurs swoop, but these never came to anything.

On August 19, Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers confirmed his team were in talks with Maddison over a new contract. His current deal runs until 2024, and fresh terms would help to push Spurs back.

James Maddison contract talks underway

“There are talks for Maddison’s new deal,” Rodgers said (via Fabrizio Romano). “I’m sure the club would want to extend James’ contract. Both sides have to be able to find an agreement.”

Maddison ultimately remained at the King Power past deadline day. And he has been in good form recently, notching three goals and one assist in seven outings this term.

The Englishman is one of the bright sparks for Leicester amid their poor start to the campaign. The Foxes sit bottom of the Premier League table after losing all of their last five matches.

During an interview with Sky Sports, Maddison was asked about a potential Leicester exit in the summer. He suggested Leicester will be happy Spurs and Newcastle no longer have the chance to land him.

Star speaks about transfer window

“After it shuts, I think there is a bit of a sigh of relief, especially some of the staff at football clubs,” Maddison said (via the Evening Standard).

Maddison was then asked if Leicester’s lack of summer signings is a chance for other players to shine. He replied: “I think it definitely can be. In tough times, you need your big players and your top players to grab the team. And stick the team on your back, at times.”

The 25-year-old is the main source of inspiration for Rodgers’ team. This was shown during the recent 6-2 thrashing at the hands of Spurs. Maddison scored in the 41st minute by sending a looping shot into the top corner, out of Hugo Lloris’ reach.

Leicester supporters will be delighted the club kept hold of Maddison during the summer. He is one of the players who has the talent to drag them away from their current predicament and back up the Prem table.

Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano has spoken about Milan Skriniar’s future and whether Spurs have made an approach for him.
