Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn has been told how he can take his game to the next level if he makes the move to Tottenham this summer.
Antonio Conte is looking to truly make his mark on the Spurs squad this summer with a number of key additions. He brought in just Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur in January, despite chasing a number of other signings. And while he was frustrated, Conte has managed to make serious strides with his Tottenham squad.
Indeed, they just a point at relegated Norwich on Sunday afternoon to confirm their place in the Champions League again. They last competed in the competition back in 2019 when they reached the final.
And after playing in the Conference League this season, a return to Europe’s top table will be most welcome.
That will help Conte bring in a number of top targets this summer. The club are reportedly looking at a potential deal for Paulo Dybala, who becomes a free agent this summer. Indeed, securing a top-four finish gives Spurs a genuine chance of pipping Arsenal to his signature.
However, the first pieces of business Conte will get done this summer is to secure the permanent signings of Kulusevski and Cristian Romero.
While the duo will cost a combined £68m, the signing of Kulusevski, in particular, makes plenty of sense. Indeed, Spurs will get a discount on his signing by activating his permanent transfer early.
Conte also wants to bolster his midfield engine room too.
To that end, Spurs are being strongly linked with a move for Aston Villa’s McGinn.
The Scotsman is one of the most coveted Premier League midfielders outside the top six clubs, with some excellent displays in midfield.
John McGinn advised over Tottenham transfer
Rated at £40m, the Daily Telegraph claims Conte is keen to bring him to north London.
Now pundit Frank McAvennie has told McGinn he can take his game to the next level by moving to Tottenham.
With Champions League football, or at the least Europa League football, on the agenda, McAvennie reckons McGinn will be tempted by the move.
“John is a damn good player,” McAvennie told Football Insider.
“I have watched a lot of him. I really like his attitude. He comes out with some brilliant quotes and he’s got a great personality.
“He is an excellent player and I think if you put him in that Tottenham team, with better players, of course he will get even better and go to that next level.
“If Spurs come in for him, you can see him wanting to move there, it’s a step up.
“Villa haven’t quite done it this season so if that offer comes in, it’s hard to keep him. It would be an incredible move.”
Tottenham will find it hard to tempt Villa to sell
With three goals and three assists to his name this season, McGinn is one of the first names on the Tottenham teamsheet.
He is highly rated by all at the club and Steven Gerrard would be loathe to lose him.
With a key eye for a pass, a tremendous work-rate and a great shot in him, it’s easy to see why he’s so coveted. Indeed, he’s a player Manchester United have reportedly looked at time and again.
As such, any Tottenham move will be met with a strong determination from Gerrard not to sell.
Villa are a club about to embark on a strong summer of spending themselves. As such, they have their own plans to push into the top half of the table.
And Gerrard will do all in his power to keep the 27-year-old at Villa Park.
To that end, it may take an enormous bid for Aston Villa to even consider his sale. And would Spurs pay that amount, whatever it would be?
The club has shown a tendancy to go shopping in Serie A in recent times. As such, it would be no shock to see Tottenham looking to Italy again in their quest to bolster their squad this summer.
John McGinn has been at Villa since summer 2018 and is contracted to the club until 2025.
Tottenham, meanwhile, are also reportedly readying a £25m bid for an Eintracht Frankfurt star, as per Sunday’s Transfer Gossip.
