Tottenham join race for impactful Champions League attacker while learning inviting transfer valuation

Mohammed Kudus celebrating a goal for Ajax

Tottenham Hotspur have become contenders for the signature of Champions League goal getter Mohammed Kudus, according to reports.

Kudus is currently plying his trade for Ajax, for whom he is enjoying an exciting start to the 2022-23 season. He scored within nine minutes of his latest appearance in the Champions League, against Napoli on Tuesday night. Alas, he was on the losing side, as the Serie A opposition came back to win 6-1.

Nevertheless, it has kept up his record of scoring in each of his group stage appearances so far this season. What’s more, in the Eredivisie, he has four goals from eight games to his name.

Already in August, Kudus was attracting the interest of the likes of Everton in the transfer market. The Toffees supposedly remain keen, but now face competition from Tottenham.

That’s according to German outlet Sport Bild, in a report revealing that Borussia Dortmund are candidates for Kudus’ signature as well.

The article indicates that Kudus might be available for as little as €10million (around £8.7million). It would seem to be a bargain for someone in such good goalscoring form – and might be on the optimistic side, in all honesty.

His contract with Ajax is due to run until 2025, but the Dutch giants should be bracing themselves for interest in his services much sooner.

Hence, a move to the Premier League remains a possibility. Whereas Everton seemed to be the main contenders previously, now Tottenham could have their own plans.

Antonio Conte already has plenty of attacking options to work with, but Kudus’ ability to play either up front or in midfield could make him an appealing addition to the Spurs squad.

Borussia Dortmund have trick up their sleeves

However, the report from Sport Bild has explained why Borussia Dortmund might have an ace up their sleeve to beat them to Kudus’ signature.

The 22-year-old’s national team manager with Ghana, Otto Addo, also holds a role as a talent coach for Borussia Dortmund. Hence, there could be a connection that tempts him to take the German route if he does depart Ajax.

Kudus will be working with Addo at the upcoming World Cup, which will give him another chance to showcase his talents on a bigger stage. After that, the attention could soon turn to the January transfer window.

Whether Kudus would be on the move then or later in the year is another matter. Things certainly seem to be going well enough for him in Amsterdam at present.

Mohammed Kudus looking capable of big next step

At the age of 22, Kudus will have to choose his next step carefully. He will want to continue developing in the way he has been early this season.

With that in mind, it might usually be prudent to pick a club like Everton as something of a stepping stone, without wanting to sound disrespectful. He has already admitted he would have been open to their plans for him, which would be better than sitting on a bench elsewhere.

But he is already proving himself on the European stage, which suggests he might be capable of joining someone like Tottenham or Borussia Dortmund ahead of schedule.

He would have some big names to compete with, but he is looking like someone who belongs at the top level. Therefore, Tottenham are right to be showing an interest in him.

Only time will tell how much longer he spends at Ajax and where he ends up after.
