Tottenham transfer failure ‘so frustrating’, as pundit rues Conte not nailing ‘ridiculous’ forward in summer

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, October 2022

Tottenham are looking on with envy at what they could have had with Napoli star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, one pundit has claimed.

Spurs made a host of top signings in the most recent transfer window, bolstering all across the pitch. Clement Lenglet, Yves Bissouma and Richarlison are just three players who are still finding their feet this season.

Up front, Richarlison could prove to be a club-record Tottenham signing if his initial £50million arrival from Everton rises to £60million.

However, Spurs were also looking at rising Georgian star Kvaratskhelia, who has lit up Serie A and the Champions League.

And Tottenham journalist John Wenham has admitted that it left him frustrated that the north London side did not get a deal over the line for the 21-year-old.

“He looks absolutely ridiculous every time I see him,” Wenham told Football Insider.

“He’s a complete menace on that left wing, he just bombs forward the whole time.

“He causes havoc and they got him for next to nothing. We didn’t get him which is so frustrating, we were linked with him so heavily.

“I can probably dig up the reports because he was scouted multiple times. It’s so frustrating because he is worth 10 times the amount already.”

Kvaratskhelia and his thrilling Napoli rise

Kvaratskhelia moved to Napoli this summer from Dinamo Batumi in his native Georgia.

And he has gone from an unknown quantity to a player everyone across Europe is looking at.

The youngster has scored seven goals and assisted seven others in 13 games this campaign.

Not only has he done it in Serie A – with Napoli top after nine games and yet to lose – he has also impressed in the Champions League.

In fact, his two goals and three assists in Europe’s premier competition have played a major part in Napoli securing their last-16 place after four group stage games.

Kvaratskhelia played 57 minutes in his side’s 4-1 demolition of Liverpool and grabbed an assist, catching the eye against Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Napoli star has bright future

Napoli chief Aurelio de Laurentiis has proved an outspoken character when it comes to transfer demands for his top players.

In recent years, he has talked of massive fees for Kalidou Koulibaly and Victor Osimhen in particular.

And De Laurentiis will no doubt speak about Kvaratskhelia in similar ways in the next few transfer windows.

Napoli would surely not have expected him to have the impact that he has, given his age and relative inexperience.

While the 21-year-old’s contract runs out in 2027, there is surely impetus from Napoli to think about tying him down again and inserting a premium release clause.

Having said that, Napoli are onto big things this season and they will not want to lose Kvaratskhelia any time soon.

They have an exciting blend of experience and youth and Kvaratskhelia is definitely a star player of the future.
