Tottenham facing ‘last-minute’ disruption to potential summer exit, as discarded star attracts new suitor

Matt Doherty and Dejan Kulusevski celebrating with Sergio Reguilon for Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur are being tipped to receive a ‘last-minute’ approach from a new Serie A suitor for Sergio Reguilon this summer by reports in the Italian media.

Reguilon is among the group of discarded players that Tottenham are trying to find solutions for this summer. They feel they no longer need the Spanish left-back, so have been attempting to generate interest in his services.

Recently, it emerged that the solution may come from Serie A. Atalanta have been looking into a deal for Reguilon, who could effectively replace Robin Gosens after his January transfer to Inter Milan.

But now, Calciomercato have been claiming there is another Italian contender for Reguilon’s signature. Interestingly enough, it comes as a consequence of another transfer involving two of Tottenham’s rivals from the capital city.

According to the Italian website, Lazio have now entered the race for Reguilon. They could make an approach for him towards the end of the summer transfer window.

Previously, Lazio were hoping to bring former Roma full-back Emerson Palmieri back to the Italian capital. However, the Chelsea man is now on the verge of completing a transfer across London to West Ham United.

It will force Lazio to consider alternatives, which has led them to the idea of bidding for Reguilon.

Like Atalanta, they face the problem of not being able to accommodate his high wages. However, if he lowers his demands, Reguilon could end up at either Italian destination.

If Lazio are to win the race, though, they will have to wait for some outgoings of their own. If they do manage to clear some space for Reguilon, he would be a statement signing for them, especially with his pedigree as a Real Madrid product.

Where should Tottenham send Sergio Reguilon to?

But would Lazio or Atalanta be the better choice? From Tottenham’s perspective, it may help that they are already in contact with the latter over the idea of taking Ruslan Malinovskyi in the opposite direction.

Perhaps the inclusion of Reguilon could sweeten a deal with Atalanta in that regard. That may make it the preferable outcome for Spurs, depending on the size of any eventual offers.

However, from the 25-year-old’s perspective, Lazio can offer Europa League involvement and Atalanta do not have any UEFA tournament to play in this season.

He would have to be patient if he does want to join Lazio. Alternatively, things may be a little further down the line with Atalanta.

But it seems he should start getting up to speed with his Italian in case he does end up playing in Serie A – one way or the other – by September.
