Tottenham links to potential Conte successor intensify as German club ready replacement for target

Oliver Glasner, Luciano Spalletti Frankfurt v Napoli

Eintracht Frankfurt have reportedly lined up a successor for their manager Oliver Glasner, who is one of the favourites to replace Antonio Conte at Tottenham.

Conte is still in charge of Spurs as it stands, but with Daniel Levy set to make a decision on his future by Wednesday evening, there’s a good chance he’ll be getting the sack.

A number of high-profile candidates have been linked with the job, but given these latest developments, it could be Glasner that replaces the Italian coach.

Indeed, the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Roberto de Zerbi and Thomas Tuchel have all been linked with Tottenham in recent weeks, with it looking increasingly likely that the manager is on his way out.

Conte let his emotions boil over after witnessing Spurs blow a 3-1 lead at Southampton in a 3-3 draw, launching a ferocious attack on the club, their owners and their players in a post-match interview.

It now seems very unlikely that Levy will back down from this loud-mouthed, albeit unsurprising act of insubordination, so we could see a new Tottenham manager by the end of the week.

Ryan Mason is expected to take temporary charge if Conte does get the axe, but Spurs will likely look to appoint a long-term successor before the end of the current campaign.

Glasner could be the ideal replacement for Conte

According to a report from German outlet Bild, Tottenham have already ‘made contact’ with Frankfurt manager Glasner over the possibility of becoming Conte’s successor.

The 48-year-old, who guided the German club to Europa League success last season, has a contract that is valid until 2024.

Eintracht Frankfurt’s sporting director Markus Krosche offered him a new contract until 2026, which included a rise in salary from €2.1m to €3m per year.

However, Glasner turned down the renewal offer and Bild add that he could ‘earn a lot more’ in the Premier League, with Tottenham ramping up their interest.

If the Austrian leaves Frankfurt, they have already identified Borussia Dortmund U19 coach Mike Tullberg as his possible successor, suggesting they are anticipating his departure.

Whoever does take charge at Tottenham will have a major challenge on their hands to qualify for the Champions League next season, which is, effectively, the only thing the London club have left to play for.

Spurs currently sit in fourth place in the Premier League but are only two points ahead of fifth-placed Newcastle, with the Magpies having played two games less than them,

With that in mind, the London club will have to pick up as many wins as possible if they want to maintain their spot, so they need to replace Conte quickly if he does get sacked.

Glasner defied the odds when he guided Frankfurt to winning the Europa League last term, so the Austrian coach might just be the perfect candidate for the job.
