Major Harry Kane turnaround sees Tottenham Hotspur prepare summer talks with striker

Harry Kane could now sign a new contract with Tottenham Hotspur, one year after strongly considering a future away from the club, reports claim.

Kane was a target for Manchester City last summer as they looked to replace Sergio Aguero. However, they could not meet Tottenham’s asking price. Therefore, the Premier League champions went without a new striker for the time being.

Subsequently, Kane endured a slow start to the season with Tottenham. But after Christmas, his form picked up again. Impressing as a playmaker and finisher, he concluded the campaign with 27 goals and 10 assists from 50 games in all competitions.

In the prime of his career at 28 years old, Kane’s form has been that of a player who should be in demand again. But he has known for a while that Man City will not be back in for him due to their imminent acquisition of Erling Haaland instead.

There could yet be other transfer links for Kane, who has just two years left on his contract. But reports are now indicating he is more likely to extend his deal instead.

According to sources such as the Evening Standard and 90min, both Tottenham and Kane are interested in exploring the terms of a new commitment together.

The Standard first reported on Thursday that Kane could sit down for talks with Tottenham when he returns for pre-season.

First, he is waiting to see the plans for Antonio Conte. The head coach is under contract for another season and will likely be appeased by some summer signings.

After securing Champions League qualification, Kane likes how Conte has galvanised the club. Therefore, he would be willing to agree to a contract extension, even though it would last longer than Conte’s.

Soon after the Standard‘s report, 90min carried their own slant on it. According to their information, there has been some initial contact between club and player.

That said, there has been no formal offer of a new deal yet. It seems that is going to have to wait until Kane reports back for pre-season training.

Harry Kane commitment could be huge for club and player

Before then, the England captain will have international commitments at the UEFA Nations League to be involved with in June. Then, he will take a holiday before getting to work ahead of the new season.

It seems things are heading in the right direction for Tottenham. Having Kane committed as part of their project would only be good news.

By signing a new deal, he would stand a chance of catching Jimmy Greaves’ scoring record for the club. In fact, for a player of Kane’s quality, the 18 goals he would need to match it are probably within reach next season.

In the bigger picture, he could also have his sights set on Alan Shearer’s all-time Premier League goals record. If he stays fit, there is no reason why he can’t at least get close.

And after all that has happened, it seems Tottenham could be the best place for him to try and achieve it. He will also have hopes of finally lifting silverware in the process.
