Tottenham leading the pack for Serie A midfielder, as Italian giants admit defeat and invite offers

Sandro Tonali battles Marcelo Brozovic

Tottenham are at the front of the queue to sign a midfield enforcer and his club are now open to letting him go, according to a report.

Tottenham already have a strong midfield, with Antonio Conte being able to select Yves Bissouma, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur in the middle of the park. Conte also has Oliver Skipp and Pape Matar Sarr in his squad.

But academy graduate Skipp has failed to impress his manager when he has been given opportunities. And with Sarr only 20 years of age, it is hard to blame Conte for wanting a solid new midfielder to arrive at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

He would be able to provide competition and backup for the likes of Bissouma, Hojbjerg and Bentancur.

Spurs have regularly been linked with Juventus and USA player Weston McKennie over the last 18 months or so. He is seen as a decent fit in the Spurs squad due to his Serie A and Bundesliga experience. Plus, he is unlikely to demand to go straight into the starting eleven upon his arrival.

But Spurs could also aim higher and raid one of Italy’s other illustrious clubs for a 77-cap international. Inter Milan star Marcelo Brozovic is reportedly in their crosshairs.

The 30-year-old does have a contract with the Nerazzurri which runs until summer 2026. However, he has been at the San Siro since 2016 and could push to leave Inter so he can take part in a new challenge.

Linking up with Conte at Spurs would be a great solution. The pair already know each other from Conte’s time as Inter boss between May 2019 and May 2021. During this time, Conte and Brozovic helped Inter to win their first Serie A title in 11 years.

Spurs lead chase for Inter Milan player

And it looks like a move to north London could happen. According to The Spurs Web, who cite reports emerging from Italy, Spurs are at the front of the queue to sign Brozovic.

The report doesn’t reveal which other teams hope to sign the Croatian. But whoever they are, Spurs are ‘ahead of everyone’.

Their director of football, Fabio Paratici, is apparently ready to launch an ‘onslaught’ for Brozovic. And it looks like a decent bid will be enough to tempt Inter into a sale.

Simone Inzaghi’s team had been hoping to keep him from the clutches of Spurs. Now, though, they have admitted defeat and are welcoming offers.

Perhaps the player and his agent have told Inter that he no longer wants to play for the club. And they would rather let players like these go than have them affecting the dressing room.

There is no mention of how much Brozovic may cost Spurs. transfermarkt value him at €35million (currently £30.4m). But with the star now 30 years old, Spurs are unlikely to bid this much for him.

Capturing Brozovic from a club the size of Inter would be a real signal of intent from Spurs. It would show that they mean business and that they are a side to be reckoned with in the Premier League title race.

Of course, Brozovic’s age means he would not be a long-term midfield solution for Spurs. But he could provide them with a few years of top service before hanging up his boots.

Meanwhile, Spurs and Chelsea are reportedly in a race with Barcelona for a Bundesliga ace.
