Tottenham’s prospects of adding Memphis Depay to Antonio Conte’s growing number of attacking options has been lifted following a frank admission from the player.
The Dutch forward looks destined to leave Barcelona this summer after being squeezed about at the Camp Nou. Since arriving on a free transfer in June 2021, he has seen the club seriously their attacking options. Indeed, they brought in Ferran Torres just a matter of weeks after his arrival.
The club has since added Pierre-Emerick Aubamayeng to their attack. And with the Blaugrana also looking to add both Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha this summer. Furthermore, with Ansu Fati also on their books and the possible renewal of Ousmane Dembele, Depay is facing a bleak future in Catalonia.
As such, speculation over the 28-year-old’s future has begun to increase. To that end, both Arsenal and Everton are reportedly among those considering a move.
Lately, though, it is Tottenham who have emerged as the strongest suitors.
Spurs have recently negotiated a deal with Barcelona to sign Clement Lenglet on a season’s loan. And during those enquiries, they reportedly also asked about a possible deal for Depay.
Furthermore, Spurs have seemingly received encouragement to pursue the deal. And with Barcelona seemingly making the Dutchman one of nine faces they are willing to sell, Tottenham could have a clear path to his signing.
As such, the LaLiga giants are reportedly seeking just £17m (€20m) to sanction his exit.
Memphis Depay open to Premier League return
Doubts have been raised that Depay – who struggled during a two-year spell at Manchester United between 2015 to 2017 – would be willing to return to the Premier League.
However, the 146-goal forward has opened up on his future and admits he has no fears over a potential return to England.
He said: “It is a very nice competition. It is up to the club that is interested.”
While not commenting on Tottenham directly, Depay is adamant he wants to sign for a team that plays attractive football.
“I belong in a team that plays good football and can play around me so I can do my thing. I will never rule it out,” he added.
Spurs move an option – and star has point to prove
Having only managed seven goals in 53 appearances at Manchester United, Depay left the club under something of a shadow. Often the subject of media criticism – including this claim about him dressing as a ‘Peruvian pan flute player’.
Now 28, and much more wordly-wise, the player was often came in for stick about his attitude.
However, his form since, particularly for Lyon, proves there is a talented star there. Memphis Depay netted 76 goals in 178 games for the Ligue 1 side; form which ultimately earned him his move to Barcelona.
And while he has not done badly there – scoring 13 goals in 38 games – a chance to prove his worth again in England may tempt him.
Trio of Premier League clubs chasing Barcelona forward Memphis Depay
Arsenal, Everton and Newcastle are all reportedly interested in making a move for Barcelona forward Memphis Depay.
A move to Tottenham would, however, offer no guarantees over regular games. Spurs recently brought in Richarlison and he joins a packed forward line that also boasts Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski and Lucas Moura.
That said, the price looks decent for a player of his quality. As such, Conte may well be tempted as he looks to balance another push for the top four, together with a Champions League assault.
