Memphis Depay transfer latest: Barcelona drop asking price to tempt Conte as player’s demands embarrass Man Utd

Barcelona are doing all they can to shift Memphis Depay off their books this summer after relaxing their price on the forward’s head this summer.

The 28-year-old Netherlands forward is likely to become the high-profile victim of Barca’s heavy recruitment this summer. The Blaugrana have drafted in Raphinha from Leeds and Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich to boost their forward line. And with Ousmane Dembele deciding to sign a new deal, the competition for places is tough.

As such, it seems Depay’s time is up, with a report indicating he is one of nine players they are looking to offload.

With just a year left to run on his contract, Barcelona would prefer to sell him now rather than risk losing him as a free agent next summer.

As a result, a report last week suggested two Premier League clubs were considering an approach. Tottenham reportedly lead that hunt, though Manchester United are also reportedly keeping tabs on the situation.

In terms of an asking price, Barca are reportedly seeking around £17m (€20m) for the forward. Having struck 13 times last season, the Blaugrana hope the fee will have tempted a few of his suitors to make firm bids.

However, they are yet to receive a tangible offer for his services – seemingly leading Barcelona to reconsider his price.

As such, Sport now writes they are willing to consider less than that in order to get him off their books.

To that end, Barcelona could now reportedly accept an offer as low as £12m to move the player on.

Memphis Depay sets out his stall

The reduced fee may well tempt Tottenham into a potential move with Antonio Conte still looking to add more depth to his squad.

And it seems Spurs are in the driving seat for a move with Sport outlining the player’s very specific demands.

They state the player is only willing to leave Barcelona for a club who can offer him Champions League football.

As such, he will reportedly rule out a return to Manchester United, having struggled previously at Old Trafford.

However, it is their lack of Champions League football – much like Cristiano Ronaldo – which will rule them out the running.

That will come as another kick in the teeth for Erik ten Hag, who has found his efforts to strengthen United frustrating.

Wages remain an issue

And while the transfer fee does not look like being an issue for Tottenham, the player’s wages could yet present a barrier to the deal.

The 28-year-old reportedly earns around £230,000 a week at the Nou Camp – a salary Tottenham would be unwilling to match.

He would need to take a wages drop were he to make the move to North London.

And if terms can be found, Depay will prove a useful option for Conte. Capable of playing on either wing, as a central striker or a false nine, Memphis Depay could prove a versatile signing for Spurs.

Could Memphis Depay be on his way back to the Premier League?

Memphis Depay has been linked with a return to the Premier League.

And with Lucas Moura attracting attention from Juventus, Conte may look to Depay as a like-for-like replacement.

With the Champions League to juggle alongside their push to retain their top-four spot, Conte will need as strong a squad as possible.

Spurs, meanwhile, continue to be linked with James Maddison, with Fabrizio Romano providing an update on their pursuit.
