Antonio returns with a bang to score West Ham winner against Tottenham in London derby

Michail Antonio West Ham

Michail Antonio marked his return to the West Ham starting eleven with the winning goal against Tottenham at home.

David Moyes’ side made it three victories from their last three matches in all competitions with a 1-0 triumph. The result saw the Hammers leapfrog Tottenham by going into fourth spot in the Premier League.

Antonio was rested in midweek as West Ham beat Genk 3-0 in the Europa League. In his absence, Craig Dawson, Issa Diop and Jarrod Bowen all got on the scoresheet.

The one-time Jamaica international was selected up front this time around, while goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski also returned.

West Ham started the game brightly and had the first significant chance. A deep cross found Pablo Fornals at the back post and the Spaniard proceeded to send an acrobatic volley towards goal. Tottenham skipper Hugo Lloris got down well to palm it away.

Tanguy Ndombele claimed for a penalty three minutes on after colliding with Kurt Zouma in the box. On further inspection the VAR ruled that Zouma had made contact with the ball before bringing his opponent down.

Tomas Soucek should have put the home side in front ten minutes before half-time. Fornals whipped in a cross and the midfielder rose above Sergio Reguilon to get his head to it. The defender did just enough to put Soucek off and his effort went wide.

After a quiet spell, Harry Kane got in on the action late in the first half. Reguilon crossed to the back post and the England captain got on the end of it. However, Fabianski was there to palm it over.

Tempers flared in the second half as Cristian Romero shouted at Fornals for going down too easily. Romero was shown a yellow card by the referee for his actions.

With 71 minutes gone, Reguilon gave the ball away and Fornals ran at goal. His shot deflected off Eric Dier, forcing Lloris into a fine save.

Antonio bags seventh goal of the campaign

West Ham finally broke the deadlock from the resultant corner. Left-back Aaron Cresswell put in a delightful cross which went over the heads of multiple Spurs players.

Michail Antonio, being marked by Kane, stuck out a leg to shin the ball home from close range. The goal took him to six in the league during 2021-22, and seven in all competitions. He then pulled off a typically charismatic ‘The Matrix’-style celebration.

Spurs huffed and puffed in search of an equaliser but found their attack wanting. Other than his header in the first half, talisman Kane never really had a look in.

Manager Nuno Espirito Santo looked dejected on the touchline and was seen shaking his head after West Ham’s goal.

Moyes, in contrast, can celebrate his team moving into the Premier League’s top four.
