Tottenham misfit targeted by club they bought him from after dramatic change of circumstances

Bryan Gil and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

One of the players Tottenham are trying to offload could head back to the side they signed him from despite having minimal impact there before, a report has claimed.

It could be a busy January transfer window for Tottenham, who were unable to get all the business they would have liked to complete in the summer done. They will have to try and find solutions for some players who unexpectedly stuck around.

For example, the likes of Japhet Tanganga and Pape Matar Sarr have not been used at all in the 2022-23 Premier League yet.

Another player whose gametime has been severely restricted is Bryan Gil. The winger spent the second half of last season on loan with Valencia, despite only joining Spurs in the summer of 2021 from Sevilla.

There was a feeling that Valencia would try to take him back, but it never materialised. Now, that ship may have sailed for Gil.

Since his return to north London, the 21-year-old has only been given one substitute appearance in the Premier League. Understandably, he might want to make a mid-season exit for the second consecutive season.

Fabrizio Romano recently revealed Tottenham will only sanction a departure for Gil if they can replenish their squad depth with a signing of their own. The fact that fellow winger Lucas Moura could also leave suggests it might not be so straightforward.

However, new information is emerging about where Gil might end up if he is permitted a departure.

According to Estadio Deportivo, Sevilla are actually now looking into a return for their academy graduate.

It has been a turbulent season so far for the La Liga side, who went into the World Cup break in the relegation zone. They also recently lost head coach Julen Lopetegui to Wolves, bringing back Jorge Sampaoli as his replacement.

Gil was still in the academy during Sampaoli’s first spell at Sevilla. However, they almost crossed paths when the Argentine tactician tried to take him to Marseille prior to Tottenham buying him.

Now, the report claims, Sampaoli “would love” for Gil to head back to the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium.

Aware that Tottenham are willing to loan him out in January, Sevilla are keeping a close eye on developments with their former player.

Bryan Gil could get second Sevilla chance

During his first spell with the club, Gil managed 21 appearances, two goals and two assists. If he was to return, Sevilla might need him to be more efficient.

In truth, he has never really produced outstanding statistics. Even at Valencia, for example, he failed to score from 17 games. Yet he still seemed to do enough to endear himself to the club.

Therefore, Sevilla still see some appeal in bringing Gil back. He could add to a younger core that they are trying to revert to.

Whether there would be the scope for a longer-term arrangement remains to be seen. Tottenham still have Gil under contract until June 2026, by which time he will be 25 years old.

There is still time for him to make a success of his career, but it might not be in the Premier League.

Returning to Sevilla might be an interesting option. They have not been the force they once were this season, so Gil might get more opportunities as they look to shake things up.

He has experience of being in the bottom half of La Liga. Therefore, he could contribute to their battle for survival.

It must be said that he would have more chance of playing there than for Spurs at present. Hence, he might give serious thought to the idea of a return, but only time will tell.
