Neglected Tottenham man almost certain to leave this summer with club ‘unable to afford’ to keep him
Out of favour Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks is likely to be on the move again when his loan spell at Sampdoria comes to an end this summer, according to reports.
The 27-year-old fell out of favour with now-sacked Antonio Conte, who deemed him surplus to requirements at the beginning of the season.
It is believed that Sampdoria would ideally like to sign Winks permanently but due to their ongoing financial troubles, would not be able to afford his price tag.
Despite missing the first half of the season through injury, the Englishman has now begun to flourish in the Serie A.
So far, Winks has made 11 largely impressive appearances for Sampdoria, becoming somewhat of a fan-favourite with the club’s supporters.
However, according to a report from the Sun, the Italian club are currently on the brink of bankruptcy so even if they did want to make the midfielder’s stay permanent, they simply wouldn’t be able to afford him.
This will come as a major blow to Winks, who is enjoying his stint in Italy.
Winks: ‘I don’t know what the future holds’
As mentioned, it was Conte who ultimately decided to loan out Winks after he failed to impress the manager. Despite this, it is believed that even with a new boss in charge, he would still struggle to break into the Spurs’ starting XI.
Recently, the midfielder voiced his frustrations on Conte in a recent interview, stating that the manager hadn’t contacted him once since being loaned out to Italy.
“I am on loan until the end of the season, I am satisfied with this experience, but I don’t know what the future holds and I don’t want to think about it,” Winks said.
“I can only focus on the next match, but I am proud to have made this choice. Nobody from Tottenham has contacted me, not even the coach. I was and am fully focusing on Sampdoria.”
However, with a permanent switch to Sampdoria looking almost impossible, Winks will have to look elsewhere for a move away from Spurs.
The 27-year-old has just one year remaining on his current deal at the London club, so it’s likely that he will be available on a cut-price deal.
Everton have previously registered an interest in Winks, so it’s possible that they could go back in for him. Although, they are going through financial troubles of their own at the moment.
Leeds were also linked with the midfielder last summer, so they could also consider making a move.
What seems almost certain, though, is that Winks will be leaving Tottenham this summer, the only question is which team is willing to take a punt on him.
