Tottenham initiate contact with Fiorentina over Nikola Milenkovic signing, as star told to make final decision

Fiorentina star Nikola Milenkovic

Tottenham have reportedly made contact with Fiorentina to discuss a potential move for Nikola Milenkovic, and the Italian club want him to decide on his future.

Milenkovic entering the final 12 months of his Fiorentina contract opens up the possibility of a transfer away from Florence. Fiorentina would like the centre-back to stay, but they know they can get decent money by selling him.

Several Premier League clubs have been linked with Milenkovic’s signature. Manchester United, Newcastle and West Ham are notable examples.

But it seems his most likely next destination, should a move to England occur, is Tottenham.

Spurs director Fabio Paratici knows the player well from his time working at Juventus. And according to Sport Witness, who cite reports coming out of Italy, Spurs have made steps to land Milenkovic before the new season starts.

Spurs officials have made contact with their Fiorentina counterparts in recent weeks to find out whether the Serbian is available for transfer.

There is apparently a ’50 per cent chance’ Milenkovic will leave the Artemio Franchi Stadium. One factor which could see him join Spurs is a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ with Fiorentina.

La Viola have agreed to sell him as long as their valuation is met. This is somewhere between £32million and £37.5m.

Nikola Milenkovic has big decision to make

Should Spurs fail to meet this demand, then Fiorentina will take steps to organise a new contract with Milenkovic.

However, it is the player who is in the strongest position. If he doesn’t wish to stay at Fiorentina, then he could reject the offer of a new deal and instead hand in a transfer request.

Either way, the Serie A side want to know Milenkovic’s preference. They have told him to make up his mind by August 4.

Spurs are not the only club who would like to capture Milenkovic. The report claims Italian giants Juve and Inter Milan like him too and could swoop in.

But there are two reasons why Spurs are in the driving seat for the 24-year-old’s signature, as things stand.

The first is the fact they have already begun initial talks with Fiorentina over his move. This puts them ahead of Juve and Inter in proceedings.

Secondly, Fiorentina would rather sell to a foreign club than improve Juve or Inter by allowing Milenkovic to sign for them.

As such, Fiorentina will be more happy to enter negotiations with Spurs than either of their transfer rivals.

Spurs boss Antonio Conte now has strong options for a back three thanks to the signings of Cristian Romero and Clement Lenglet. Eric Dier, Ben Davies and Davinson Sanchez are also in the squad.

But Lenglet’s move is only a season-long loan, meaning a player needs to be brought in permanently.

Milenkovic would be a good solution, given his impressive displays in Serie A and his high potential.

Meanwhile, Conte has made an admission about squad outcasts who can leave Spurs this summer.
