Tottenham exit ‘gaining momentum’ as recent arrival convinces club over summer move

Pierluigi Gollini of Tottenham

Tottenham’s Pierluigi Gollini could secure an early exit from the Premier League as the goalkeeper has reportedly convinced a Serie A club over a summer bid.

Gollini joined Tottenham on a season-long loan from Atalanta in July. Tottenham have the option to buy him for €15million (£12.9m) in the summer, as per BBC Sport.

Gollini was brought in to provide competition for current number one Hugo Lloris. He was hoping to usurp the 35-year-old Frenchman and ultimately become his long-term successor.

But things haven’t worked out like that. Gollini has had to rely on cup competitions for game time and is yet to feature in the league.

The one-time Italy international was hoping to feature in Tuesday’s FA Cup tie against Middlesbrough. However, manager Antonio Conte went for Lloris instead, as Spurs crashed out of the competition with a 1-0 defeat after extra time.

Sport Witness, who cite reports coming out of Italy, provide an update on Gollini’s future.

First of all, they suggest Tottenham’s option to buy the 26-year-old is less than previously stated – €13m (£10.8m), rather than €15m.

Levy unlikely to sanction Pierluigi Gollini signing

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will not activate it though, as he cannot justify signing Gollini for Conte not to play him.

As such, the shot-stopper will likely return to Atalanta this summer. But that is not the end of proceedings.

Gollini’s Atalanta contract expires in 2023 and the Italian outfit are looking to sell. Lazio have taken an interest in his situation are ‘convinced’ he can replace current keeper Thomas Strakosha.

Gollini’s potential transfer to the Rome-based team is now ‘gaining momentum’, with a summer offer set to come in.

The report also states Lazio have spoken with the player and his agent, Beppe Riso, to reveal their hopes of completing a deal.

Double-edged sword for Spurs

Meanwhile, Harry Kane may not want to wait for Dejan Kulusevski to reach his Tottenham potential as the striker wants immediate success, one pundit has said.

According to former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock, Spurs have an exciting player on their hands in Dejan Kulusevski. However, Warnock added that 28-year-old Kane will not wait around for trophies.

“The signs are there that they are improving,” Warnock told Sky Sports. “The signing of Kulusevski is really good and a really positive signing.

“He’s 21, but you look at his age and you go ‘the potential going forward, that is really exciting’.

“But Harry Kane doesn’t want future. He wants now. He wants to win trophies and in an ideal world he will want to win them with Tottenham.”
